1. SPF doesn’t last all day
“One of the biggest myths I see is that applying SPF once in the morning is enough. During a heatwave, higher temperatures, sweat and more time outdoors can all affect how well your sunscreen performs. As a general rule, SPF should be reapplied every two hours when you’re outside, and more frequently if you’re swimming or sweating heavily.”

2. Don’t leave SPF in a hot car
“Sunscreen is formulated to stay stable within a certain temperature range. Leaving products in a hot car, on a sun lounger or on a windowsill for long periods can affect their texture and performance. If your SPF has separated, changed colour or developed an unusual smell, it’s best to replace it.”

3. Check the expiry date
“Lots of people use the same sunscreen year after year, but SPF products do have an expiry date. The UV filters become less effective over time, especially if the product has been repeatedly exposed to heat. Before using an older sunscreen, always check the expiry date or the period after-opening symbol on the packaging.”

4. Apply more than you think you need
“Most people simply don’t apply enough sunscreen to achieve the level of protection stated on the bottle. For the face and neck, around two finger lengths of product is generally recommended. Applying too little can significantly reduce the protection your skin receives from UV damage.”

5. SPF is still essential in the UK
“A heatwave often encourages people to spend longer outdoors, increasing UV exposure. Even in the UK, UV levels can become high enough to cause skin damage surprisingly quickly. Wearing a broad spectrum SPF 30 or above every day, alongside protective clothing and shade where possible is one of the most effective ways to protect skin health.”

6. Understanding SPF labels
“SPF can be confusing, but there are a few key things to look for. The SPF number refers to protection against UVB rays, which are primarily responsible for sunburn. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and contribute to premature ageing, pigmentation and long term skin damage. Ideally, choose a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and a high level of UVA protection.

If you’re buying a Korean sunscreen, you’ll often see a PA rating such as PA+, PA++, PA+++ or PA++++. This refers to UVA protection, with more plus signs indicating a higher level of defence. For everyday use, I recommend SPF 30 or 50 with strong UVA protection, ideally PA+++ or above, particularly during periods of high UV exposure such as a heatwave.”

Face The Future recently discovered that only 1 in 6 people wear SPF everyday (16%) in a OnePoll survey of 2,000 Brits, as part of their 365 Days of SPF campaign. To encourage this – Face The Future has absorbed the VAT on key sunscreen brands and products as part of their campaign.

Two dentists from North Shields are swapping drills for running shoes as they prepare to take on the Copenhagen Ironman – a gruelling test of endurance, determination and resilience – while raising funds for The Percy Hedley Foundation.

Kathryn Eccles and Jamie Dury from Union Quay Dental on North Shields Fish Quay will compete in the event on 16 August, tackling a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and a full marathon (42.2km), all in a single day.

The pair are taking on the challenge in support of The Percy Hedley Foundation, the North East charity that supports children, young people and adults with disabilities through specialist education, care, therapies and supported living services.

Kathryn has already completed several triathlons over recent years, including two Half Ironman events.

She said: “It’ll be my first full Ironman, but I’ve done a few shorter triathlons over the last few years. I completed a Half Ironman last year and another one recently as part of the build-up to Copenhagen.

“I enjoy the variety that triathlon brings. My best discipline is swimming, but I particularly enjoy training for the running and cycling, especially as we move into summer. Living by the coast means I rarely get bored of running up and down the coastline.”

Preparing for an event of this scale requires significant commitment, with both balancing demanding careers alongside an intensive training schedule.

Jamie, who has also completed Half Ironman events, said the challenge represented an opportunity to push himself beyond his comfort zone while supporting an important local cause.

He said: “A full Ironman is one of those challenges that’s equal parts exciting and intimidating. The training has been tough, but it’s also been incredibly rewarding. Every swim, cycle and run brings us a little closer to Copenhagen, and raising money for The Percy Hedley Foundation gives us an extra reason to keep going when the training gets difficult. Hopefully we’ll make it to the finish line and raise a decent amount for a fantastic cause along the way.”

As race day approaches, emotions are running high.

Kathryn said: “I’m feeling a mixture of excitement and nerves, probably more nerves than excitement if I’m honest! It’s a huge undertaking, but I’m looking forward to the sense of achievement and the camaraderie that surrounds an event like this.”

The Percy Hedley Foundation has been supporting people with disabilities across the North East for more than 70 years, helping individuals achieve greater independence and fulfil their potential.

Bev Reid, Corporate Relationships Manager said: “We are absolutely delighted to be collaborating with Union Quay Dental. In today’s challenging climate, support like this is more vital than ever.

“Kathryn and Jamie’s brave efforts will enable Percy Hedley Foundation to continue to provide vital services to those who need us most.

This is a powerful example of how community support can drive real, lasting change in people’s lives. We wish Kathryn and Jamie a safe and successful trip.”

The Ben Kinsella Trust has announced that Knife Crime Awareness Week 2026 will take place from 18 to 24 May alongside National Police Chiefs’ Council Sceptre Week, combining policing, prevention and community action in a coordinated effort to tackle knife crime.

At the centre of this year’s campaign is a national pledge calling on schools, youth organisations, charities, businesses, faith groups, sports clubs and trusted adults to commit to taking meaningful action to help keep young people safe.

By signing the Knife Crime Awareness Week pledge, individuals and organisations commit to engaging young people in honest conversations about knife crime, challenging harmful myths, promoting non-violent alternatives and ensuring young people know where to access support.

Crime and Policing Minister Sarah Jones said: “For me, Knife Crime Awareness Week is about bringing people together to protect young people and stop violence before it starts. That commitment sits at the heart of this government’s Halving Knife Crime Plan – saving lives, transforming the futures of young people and protecting communities across the country.

“Knife Crime Awareness Week is always a deeply personal and emotional time for me and my family. Nearly two decades on from losing my brother Ben, the pain of his absence has not lessened, but neither has our determination to create change in his name.

“This week is a powerful reminder that behind every statistic is a life cut short, a family shattered, and a community left grieving. We must never become numb to that reality. Every young person lost to knife crime is someone’s son, daughter, sibling, or friend and every loss is preventable.

“At the Ben Kinsella Trust, we continue to work tirelessly to educate young people about the real consequences of carrying a knife, challenge harmful myths, and provide them with the confidence to make safer choices. But we cannot do this alone. Real, lasting change requires all of us, parents, schools, police, policymakers, communities, and young people themselves to come together and take responsibility.

“Knife Crime Awareness Week is not just about reflection; it is about action. This week, I urge everyone to join me and take the Knife Crime Awareness Week Pledge and to be part of the solution. Together, we can work towards a future where no family has to endure the heartbreak that we live with every day.”

Stephen Clayman, National Police Chiefs’ Council lead for knife crime, said:

“Partnership working is key to tackling knife crime and by running policing’s Sceptre week in collaboration with Knife Crime Awareness Week, we demonstrate our collective commitment and action.

“The Ben Kinsella Trust is invaluable, focusing on a positive future with resources to support parents, carers and teachers in having important conversations with young people with a wider reach to other voluntary organisations. In policing, we all too often see the devastating consequences of knife crime and prevention should always be our priority.

“There is a huge amount of work from my policing colleagues across the country to keep their local communities safe, whether through surrender schemes, engagement events, specialist patrols or education activities. Knife crime is not inevitable, and Sceptre week is the time to highlight, celebrate and learn from that work so that together we can help reduce it.”

Patrick Green, CEO of the Ben Kinsella Trust, said:

“Knife Crime Awareness Week is about far more than awareness raising or messaging, it is about meaningful action, shared responsibility and long-term collaboration. By joining forces with NPCC’s Sceptre Week, we highlight that preventing knife crime is a collective responsibility. From frontline police officers to teachers, grassroots groups, parents and carers, it takes all of us working together to keep young people and our communities safe.

“Our message this Knife Crime Awareness Week is clear, everyone has a role to play in preventing knife crime and protecting young lives. We’re urging individuals and organisations to stand with us by showing their support and committing to action. By signing the pledge on the Knife Crime Awareness Week website, you are taking an important step towards creating safer futures for young people and helping to build a culture where carrying a knife is never seen as an option.”

The investment has been led by co-owners and principal dentists Jarlath McAteer and Jamie Dury, who acquired the well‑established practice in 2025 and have since embarked on an ambitious programme to modernise facilities while preserving the character of its Grade II listed Richard Irvin building.

The project represents a significant private investment in dental infrastructure in the area and has included extensive structural upgrades, new clinical technology and expanded treatment capacity.

The programme has included major building works, installation of new clinical equipment and the creation of additional surgeries, increasing the practice’s ability to serve patients at a time when access to dental care remains a challenge across the region. The development has been financed through a combination of bank lending and private investment by the owners.

McAteer said the refurbishment was driven by the need to modernise the building’s infrastructure while supporting the long‑term growth of the practice.

“This was far more than a cosmetic refurbishment. The building was completely stripped back and rebuilt internally, including new drainage, full rewiring and a modern digital infrastructure,” he said.

“As a listed building the project presented some challenges, but the investment ensures we now have facilities and technology that match the high standard of care we want to provide.”

The practice has transitioned to a fully digital workflow as part of the redevelopment, incorporating cloud‑based systems, AI‑supported telephone technology and advanced diagnostic equipment.

Each surgery has been fitted with new A‑dec dental chairs integrated with electric motors and intra‑oral cameras, while digital scanners and digital X‑ray systems have been installed throughout the practice. The clinic has also introduced a Modjaw occlusal analyser, allowing clinicians to assess patients’ bite dynamics in real‑time motion.

Co‑owner Jamie Dury said the investment was designed to future‑proof the practice and allow it to expand its clinical offering.

“Our aim is to build a modern independent dental practice that combines cutting‑edge technology with a highly skilled clinical team,” he said.

“We are continuing to develop specialist expertise within the practice and are actively expanding our team to support growing patient demand.”

Union Quay Dental currently employs 32 staff including seven dentists, with recruitment underway for additional clinicians and support staff as part of the expansion.

The practice has recently introduced specialist endodontic services and is developing referral pathways for implants, cosmetic dentistry and periodontal treatment. Several

members of the clinical team are also undertaking postgraduate training in orthodontics and aesthetic dentistry.

The refurbishment has been delivered using a predominantly North East supply chain, with Teesside‑based project management firm BH Projects overseeing the works and Prodrive Shopfitting Ltd in Middlesbrough, delivering the building programme.

McAteer and Dury both trained at Newcastle University before establishing their careers in the North East and say their decision to invest in the Fish Quay practice reflects their long‑term commitment to the region.

“Neither of us are originally from the area, but we both chose to build our careers and our lives here,” McAteer said.

“When the opportunity came up to take on the practice it felt like the right moment to put down roots and create something we could grow over the long term.”

With the Fish Quay continuing to evolve as one of the North East’s most vibrant coastal communities, and with North Shields bidding to become UK Town of Culture 2028, the pair say the timing felt right to invest in the future of the practice.

“With more people moving to the coast and regeneration happening across the Fish Quay, we’re seeing growing demand from patients who want access to high‑quality private dentistry locally,” Dury added.

Alongside the refurbishment, the owners have introduced new dental membership plans designed to make private dental care more accessible, with maintenance plans starting from £14.99 per month. Unlike many practices, these plans are designed and managed entirely in‑house rather than outsourced to external providers, giving the team full control over the benefits offered and allowing them to tailor care around the needs of their patients.

Looking ahead, the focus for the practice will be on consolidating growth, expanding specialist services and continuing to invest in technology and training.

“We’re proud to be one of the few fully independent dental practices in the region,” said McAteer.

“That independence allows us to prioritise patient care, build a strong team culture and continue investing in the practice for the long term.”

A new revolutionary low-calorie lager (that actually tastes amazing) is set to shake up the global beer market.

The experts at ROLEY’S have discovered a new brewing science that reduces fermentation time to seven hours without compromising taste.

Combined with a series of secret, all-natural ingredients ROLEY’S Super Natural Lager has already won Best International Lager (UK) at the World Beer Awards 2025.

The wunderkind has taken 10 years to develop, and the result is a lager which contains just 0.1g of sugar, and only 89 calories per 330ml can – 35.8% fewer than other 4.4% lagers.

The breakthrough beer is the brainchild of former professional rugby player Stewart Rowley, who, back in the day, would think nothing of downing half a dozen pints after a hard-fought match for Harlequins.

But fast forward 20-odd years, and today’s beer drinkers are more health-conscious and discerning than the previous generation, particularly women.

Identifying individuals who want a cleaner, more conscious lifestyle, ROLEY’S is now also the official beer partner of HYROX, the global fitness racing series.

Entrepreneur Rowley said: “We have to be careful about the language used to describe Roley’s as the field is very regulated, but the beer is packed with vitamins, like B3, B5, and B9.

“We want to position ourselves away from traditional lagers and show that we are the new option for people, inspirational people, that work hard and play hard. This will benefit everyone. You can save calories and not have the guilt of drinking a full-calorie beer afterwards. Roley’s is here for people who want to live well and still raise a glass. Women tend to prefer us because there’s no sugar, there’s no bloating, no nonsense.

“For the World Beer Awards to say we’re as good as any other beer, or better than any of the other beers internationally, in terms of taste is huge. I’m so proud of our award. It’s been a long time in development, but it’s definitely worth the wait.”

The beer was developed using ROLEY’S SmartBrew process, a technology created in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University that allows beer to ferment much faster than traditional brewing methods. It means the beer is ready to drink in 7 hours rather than the four or five days it takes other beers to finish fermenting.

The process not only improves brewing efficiency and sustainability but also opens the door for innovation across the wider drinks sector.

Rowley said his own experience after quitting rugby led to the Eureka moment. “Like many former athletes, I learned the hard way that you can’t keep eating like a rugby player when you no longer train like one.

After I quit, the weight started creeping on, and as I was working in the fast-paced drinks industry, it meant I was drinking most days.

Before long, I found myself struggling to perform, both personally and professionally. That’s when Roley’s journey began. I thought, well I can’t change, so the beer has to change! Now we have a product that blows away the competition because of the quality we offer.”

According to the latest search behaviour analysis, UK shoppers showed a stronger desire for next day delivery in the run up to Valentine’s this year, compared to 2025.

The data shows searches peaked a day earlier this year, on 12th February, rather than 13th in 2025. According to Ned Gammell, VP of Sales and logistics workforce expert at Quinyx, it evidences that, although consumers were slightly more prepared for Cupid, the demand for next day delivery remains strong.

He said: “Whether it’s fresh flowers or personalised gifts, consumers increasingly expect next‑day delivery as standard, especially around key trading moments.

”While we’re observing a long-term trend of higher consumer expectations for next day delivery services, this could also be considered a potential red flag, signalling a lack of trust in advertised delivery times – and that presents a real problem for the sector.”

Analysis showed that the most recent festive period represented a 12-month high for next day delivery demand. Gammell adds: “When it comes to workforce planning within the logistics industry, temporary staff considerably ease the load during the festive period. This just isn’t a feasible option for one-off events or smaller gift-giving holidays, like Valentine’s Day.

“Warehouses, distribution centres and courier networks already run tight margins with lean teams, which leaves little room for error. These spikes in demand threaten delivery systems and can lead to delays, confusion and disappointed customers. That’s not to mention layering in ongoing industry struggles with driver shortages, alongside attracting and retaining talent.

“Success during peak weeks is about deploying staff in a smarter way. Forecasting, dynamic scheduling and real‑time shift optimisation are now more critical than ever.

“If teams aren’t already harnessing AI in their planning, they risk being left behind. Companies need the ability to flex staffing levels, move workers between sites, and plug gaps before they cause bottlenecks.”

With intelligent, AI-driven scheduling tools offered by Quinyx, logistics operators can:

Attract younger talent with flexible, lifestyle-friendly shifts

Retain older workers through phased or reduced-hour options

Reduce burnout and absenteeism by balancing workloads

Optimise resources around real-time demand peaks.

Gammell concludes: “It’s clear that next-day delivery expectations will continue to rise, and these will stretch logistics operations. The companies who thrive will be the ones who have the technology at their disposal to optimise workforce performance, manage labour cost and maintain service levels.”

Edwards Mazda and Romford Mazda secure top spot in Sales and Aftersales leagues respectively.

For the third consecutive year, Newport Mazda claimed the award for Mazda Approved Used Car.

Mazda has recognised the top performing dealerships, across the sales and aftersales departments in its annual All Stars awards. Now in its seventh year, the awards celebrate dealerships that placed within the top 25 in the 2025 Mazda Sales and Aftersales leagues, alongside top performing dealers within Fleet and Used Cars. The evening also celebrates a group of ‘star performers’ – individuals that are nominated for individual stand out performance and contribution in their areas.

With a strong network of 114 dealerships across the UK, the All Stars Sales and Aftersales Leagues measure dealer performance across a number of different categories for both respective areas, including customer satisfaction surveys, renewals performance and service loyalty.

With high performing scoring in metrics across the board, Edwards Mazda Kempsey achieved first place in the sales league rankings, while Romford Mazda secured the top spot as number one Aftersales Dealer for the third time since the inception of the awards.

Oakmere Mazda Northwich, winners of the overall 2025 Mazda Dealer League, took home the prize for ‘Enquiry Management’. For the third consecutive year, Newport Mazda once again claimed the award for Mazda Approved Used Car, while TW White & Sons Great Bookham has been recognised for Parts Performance for the second year in a row.

Other winners from the 13 award categories include: previous All Stars award winners RRG Mazda Stockport for Fleet Specialist Dealer, Bourne Road Mazda Crayford for Customer Satisfaction across service, plus Magna Mazda Dorchester for Customer Satisfaction across sales.

In addition, nine individual Star performers were honoured by Mazda Business Managers and Regional Business Managers in special recognition for their performance excellence over the last 12 months. Among those who received individual awards were Amanda Savage at Vertu Mazda Redditch for her focus and leadership guiding her sales team, Paul Snowball from Stoneacre Newcastle for his outstanding performance and Briony Widman at Sandicliffe Nottingham for her strong leadership.

Commenting on this year’s All Stars results, Laura Brailey, Sales Director at Mazda UK, said: “The Mazda All Stars awards evening is a fantastic opportunity for Mazda UK to celebrate exceptional performances of the top performing dealers across sales, service, fleet and used cars, as well as certain hand selected star performers from each territory”.

Adding, “We recognise that delivering a strong performance across a variety of areas consistently throughout a 12-month period takes focus, resilience and passion. Mazda UK is grateful to be able to host this very special awards evening so that we can thank everyone involved in contributing to the success of our brand”.

January 2026 saw temperatures fall below −10°C in multiple regions and reach −14.7°C in Scotland during an Arctic outbreak. While the UK remains on a long-term warming trend, this winter has been characterised by sharper cold incursions and more abrupt volatility than recent milder seasons, with prolonged frost, ice and snow disruption across parts of the country.

Such winter volatility amplifies the already widespread chronic pain across the UK. Between one-third and one-half of UK adults are estimated to experience chronic pain, with around 8 million reporting pain that is moderate to severely disabling. An increase in “treatment”, “medical cannabis” and “therapy” Google searches during cold weather indicates the hunt for pain relief.

Cold, damp conditions and barometric pressure changes are consistently associated in clinical research with increased stiffness, flare frequency and pain severity in musculoskeletal and inflammatory conditions.
Forecasts indicate further unsettled conditions into early spring, with alternating mild and cold spells rather than a stable transition. For millions living with persistent pain, this means ongoing symptom fluctuation, sustained sleep disruption and elevated absence risk.

Sickness absence linked to chronic conditions is no longer a short winter spike. It is an unpredictable, year-round workforce pressure intensified by weather volatility.

Comment from Jon Robson, CEO of Mamedica:
“Cold snaps and sharp weather changes disproportionately affect people already living with chronic pain. Sick Note Britain shows how quickly that translates into working lives, from reduced hours to job exit. Chronic illness must be recognised as a mainstream workforce reality. Earlier clinical intervention and recognition of legitimate treatment pathways, including prescribed cannabis-based medicines where appropriate, can help people remain economically active and reduce preventable absence.”

Physiotherapist and ultrarunner Danny Brunton reveals how runners should utilise AI-generated programmes while maintaining realistic expectations

From marathon first-timers to experienced club runners, AI-powered coaching apps have become an increasingly popular part of training routines across the UK. However, recent news has highlighted that AI apps are actually causing more injuries.

A record-breaking 1.1 million people applied for the ballot to enter the 2026 TCS London Marathon, a 36% increase over the 2025 ballot. With the marathon quickly approaching on April 26th, many runners have turned to app-generated plans for fast, accessible guidance as their training ramps up.

Research indicates that over four in five (84%) fitness consumers are interested in using AI to personalise their workout routines. While these tools offer structure and motivation, experts warn that their growing influence comes at a critical point in the training calendar, when rapid mileage increases and race pressure can significantly raise the risk of injury.

Runna, a popular AI-powered running app, has faced recent criticism for potentially causing increased, faster-paced injuries, such as stress fractures and shin splints, by designing training plans that are too aggressive and offer insufficient recovery.

Research, analysed by sports-tech brand Enertor, found that 86% of AI training plans built using minimal runner data were rated below expert standard. Even when more detail was provided, half still failed to meet professional benchmarks.

Alongside this, research also shows that increasing a long run by more than 10% can raise injury risk by up to 64% within one to two days, with larger mileage spikes more than doubling the risk. This is particularly concerning when algorithms adjust training largely on pace and logged distance rather than health and well-being, asking runners to push harder without understanding their condition.

Physiotherapist and Enertor ambassador Danny Brunton says the biggest risk he sees with AI-generated training plans is load mismanagement.

“AI plans are mainly guided by data such as pace, distance and heart rate, but they can’t fully interpret pain patterns, tissue tolerance, previous injury history, sleep quality, stress or subtle fatigue markers,” Brunton explains. “Without that clinical insight, runners may continue progressing through discomfort, increasing their risk of overuse injuries. There’s also a tendency to trust the plan more than what our own body is telling us.”

He adds that injury risk often increases when runners feel aerobically fit, but their tissues have not adapted at the same pace.

“Cardiovascular fitness can adapt much faster than musculoskeletal tissues,” Brunton says. “Our heart and lungs may feel ready, but tendons, bones and connective tissue adapt more slowly. Rapid increases in load don’t allow sufficient time for tissue remodelling, which increases the risk of overload injuries such as stress reactions or tendinopathies.”

Common injuries linked to poorly managed training load include Achilles and patellar tendinopathies, medial tibial stress syndrome (shin splints), plantar fasciopathy and patellofemoral knee pain, all of which are strongly associated with excessive or poorly progressed training.

While AI coaching tools focus primarily on pace and distance, Brunton notes that runners should also consider a range of additional factors.

“Sleep quality, life stress, footwear transitions and previous injury history are just some of the things that influence tissue capacity and injury risk,” he says. “These variables are difficult for AI systems to accurately take into account.”

The popularity of digital training makes the issue timely. Nearly one in five (19%) UK adults now run at least once a month, and participation in digital running communities continues to grow, meaning more runners are relying on app-based guidance to prepare for races.

Despite the concerns, Brunton stresses that AI can still play a positive role when used appropriately.

“AI adds value in structure, accountability, data tracking and progression planning,” he says. “Apps like Runna, Garmin Coach and RunKeeper can be excellent for recreational runners seeking guidance and consistency. Where AI falls short is in clinical reasoning. It can’t assess movement quality or interpret early warning signs of injury in the way a physiotherapist or experienced coach can.”

Managing impact forces during higher mileage training can also support long-term tissue health.

“Keeping cumulative load within tissue capacity is key,” Brunton explains. “That means progressing mileage gradually, incorporating rest or cross-training days, maintaining strength training and wearing shock-absorbing inner soles. Lowering repetitive peak forces and improving load distribution supports tendon and bone adaptation over time.”

Once runners have reviewed their programme and managed cumulative load, Enertor advises continuing to prioritise overall wellbeing. The brand recommends its PX1 Running Insoles, designed to provide advanced shock absorption and energy return during high-impact training phases.

Developed for elite athletes, Enertor’s PX1 insole technology is now widely used by runners of all levels. The PX1 material absorbs up to 89% of shock energy, reducing impact forces that can contribute to injury.

By reducing repetitive impact forces on joints and soft tissue, PX1 insoles aim to support tissue tolerance during heavier mileage blocks, something AI plans may schedule but cannot physically protect against.

“For runners following structured programmes, reducing impact stress can help tissues adapt more comfortably,” Brunton adds.

“Treat the plan as a guide, not a rulebook. Only increase weekly mileage by around five to ten percent, don’t ignore pain that alters your gait or lasts longer than 48 hours, prioritise sleep and nutrition and seek early input from a physiotherapist rather than pushing through. Protecting your health is what ultimately gets you to the start line.”

Yorkshire children’s cancer charity Candlelighters has published advice on how to spot the symptoms of childhood cancer, as part of International Childhood Cancer Day on Sunday February 15th.

Emily Wragg is the CEO of Candlelighters and says: “Cancer in children and young people is different to cancer in adults. Whereas many cancers in adults are influenced by risk factors or the natural ageing of the body, childhood cancers do not have a known cause. The types of cancers children get are often different to cancers in adults too. The most common types of cancers in children aged 0-14 years are leukaemias, brain and other central nervous system (CNS) tumours, and lymphomas.

She continues: “The number of children who develop cancer is much lower than the number of adults who develop cancer, but still, four families every day in the UK will receive this heartbreaking news. Early diagnosis of childhood cancer can be crucial, and we want parents to feel confident they can spot the signs and symptoms.”

Emily emphasises that childhood cancer symptoms can be very similar to other illnesses and vary between children. The following symptoms are usually not cancer, but please visit your doctor if your child has any of these. Knowing these signs and symptoms can aid in early diagnosis.

Continued, unexplained weight loss.

Headaches, often with early morning vomiting.

Increased swelling or persistent pain in the bones, joints, back or legs.

Lump or mass, especially in the abdomen, neck, chest, pelvis or armpits.

Development of excessive bruising, bleeding or rash.

Constant, frequent, or persistent infections.

A whitish colour behind the pupil.

Nausea that persists, or vomiting without nausea.

Constant tiredness or noticeable paleness.

Eye or vision changes that occur suddenly or persist.

Recurring or persistent fevers of unknown origin.

It is also important for families to know that childhood cancer symptoms often appear in clusters, are persistent, and can be progressive. While these traits do not automatically mean cancer, parents should trust their instincts and speak to a doctor if they are concerned.

Research is being done to better understand what causes cancer in children. Parents of children with cancer can sometimes feel like something they did, or didn’t do, caused their child’s cancer. But the causes of childhood cancers remain unknown, and there is no known way to prevent them; no one should feel blamed.

Emily concludes: “This year, on International Childhood Cancer Day, we’re reflecting on the challenges of childhood cancer, and celebrating how our shared efforts are creating real change around the world.

“Survival of childhood cancers in the UK has drastically increased since the 1970s. Now, 80% of children and young people diagnosed with cancer will survive for at least ten years. There is, however, much work still to be done to improve survival across different types of cancers and to make the process of living through and beyond treatment better for children.”
