People across the UK are being invited to join International Animal Rescue’s (IAR) latest fundraising challenge and help bears rescued from captivity.

The “Step Up for Bears” virtual challenge runs throughout July 2026 and asks supporters to walk 56 miles; that’s 1 mile for each of IAR’s rescued bears in Armenia. Whether tackling the challenge in their local park, walking the countryside or logging miles on a treadmill/gym visits/commuting, every step will help give the bears a second chance at life.

All of the funds raised by this challenge will go towards lifelong sanctuary, expert veterinary care, food and enrichment toys for IAR’s rescued bears.

Alan Knight OBE, President of International Animal Rescue said: “The suffering these rescued bears have faced breaks my heart. Last year we rescued three bears from a back yard. These were some of the worst conditions I have ever seen. The stench, the filth, the sheer cruelty of locking these animals up in tiny cages and feeding them cola, it was absolutely horrific. But, thanks to this challenge we can help provide these rescued bears with the care they deserve. Each step participants take will help us to continue to provide sanctuary and specialist care for these animals.”

The beauty of this challenge is that it’s very flexible and steps can be logged any time between 1–31 July 2026 and the entry fee is just £5. There are also exclusive rewards for those that fundraise, including medals, T-shirts and limited edition Step Up for Bears merchandise.

You can find out more about International Animal Rescue’s work rescuing and rehabilitating bears in Armenia. International Animal Rescue has been rescuing bears from captivity since 2017 and work closely with local partners to provide them with a place of safety where they can live out the rest of their lives.

You can sign up for the challenge here: https://shop.internationalanimalrescue.org/collections/events/products/2026-step-up-for-bears

Helen is a dog lover whose life changed after she welcomed a new member into the family, Monty, a stray who had spent three years at a rescue centre. His many issues from fear and anxiety, leading to reactivity to strangers and other dogs was a big problem, but their love for Monty meant Helen and her husband were determined to help Monty be happy in his life! One thing led to another and with help from several dog charities including Yellow Dog UK https://yellowdoguk.co.uk/ Monty learnt to be a much more relaxed and happy dog.

The journey was challenging but now both Monty and Helen have found new joy and happiness and Helen’s art has been an important and inspiring part of this wonderful adventure … This is Helen’s story…

‘In 2020, we had the pandemic. This brought along a whole new level of Monty’s behaviour problems as like a lot of dogs, he developed separation anxiety. We went from having a dog that could be left comfortably for four hours to having a dog that was barking and whining before we’d even got to the end of the garden path. So we jumped into behaviour modification for the second time. My working hours were reduced, absences were managed and dog sitters were slowly introduced into Monty’s tiny circle of trust. We joined an online separation anxiety course and gradually Monty was able to be left for longer and longer.

Once Monty was able to be left for two hours I joined a local painting class. I really enjoyed my painting lessons as it was my two hours of relaxation every week. I was absolutely gutted when the rent on the unit shot up and the tutor had to stop the lessons. I couldn’t find any other lessons locally where you could work on your own art whilst getting advice from a tutor but sometime after that an advert popped up on Facebook for online drawing tutorials with Bonny Snowdon Academy…

Over the next few months I followed various tutorials and then started working from my own photo references. One of my friends paid me to do a commission of her cat and gradually more and more people started buying commissions.

I now work from home on my wildlife and pet portraits, alongside my art teacher job. I’m so lucky to have two jobs that I absolutely love AND I get to spend more time with Monty, who is now over 13 and pretty much the perfect dog,

One of my favourite things about being a pet portrait artist is hearing all the relatable stories and memories about people’s dogs and seeing so many special photos. I love the dogs pulling hilarious faces, the cute puppies, the special rescue dogs, the water babies, the food and toy obsessed ones and the gorgeous grey faces of all the adorable seniors.

My memorial portraits are probably the most special of all, as someone has trusted me to create a beautiful piece of art of their furry family member, which will be displayed in pride of place for many years, and which will bring back all those feelings of love every time they look at it.

If you’re interested in having a pet commission, I can help with selecting the photos which will work best for composition, detail and colours and if you’re after a memorial portrait and don’t have many clear, detailed photos I can probably help with this too.

And most importantly, because raising awareness ofYellow Dog UK is really close to my heart, if you quote Yellow Dog UK https://yellowdoguk.co.uk/ I’ll give 10% of the cost to the charity. That way, more people can learn about our special “Yellow” dogs.’

If you feel Yellow Dog UK https://yellowdoguk.co.uk/ could help you and your dog, please do get in touch !

Every year on October 27th, cat lovers across the UK unite to celebrate National Black Cat Day — a heartfelt campaign led by Cats Protection to shine a light on the charm, elegance, and mystery of black cats, while tackling the lingering myths that too often see them overlooked in shelters.

This special day is not just about showing love to our midnight-furred companions — it’s about changing perceptions, breaking superstitions, and giving every feline a fair chance at finding their forever home.

The Origins of National Black Cat Day

National Black Cat Day was launched in 2011 by Cats Protection, the UK’s leading feline welfare charity. The charity noticed a worrying trend: black and black-and-white cats were waiting significantly longer to be adopted than cats of other colours.

Why? Myths and misconceptions. Some still associate black cats with bad luck — a superstition dating back centuries. Others overlook them simply because they don’t photograph well for social media.

To change this, Cats Protection created National Black Cat Day — a campaign to celebrate the sleek beauty of black cats, showcase their lovable personalities, and remind people that every cat deserves a home, no matter their colour.

The Superstitions: From Bad Luck to Good Fortune

Black cats have long been surrounded by superstition — but the meaning depends on where you are in the world.

In the UK and Japan, a black cat crossing your path is often seen as a sign of good luck.

In America and parts of Europe, the same encounter is sometimes viewed as an omen of misfortune.

The myths can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when black cats were unfairly linked to witchcraft and bad omens. However, in British folklore, sailors believed a black cat on board brought good luck and safe passage, while a gift of a black cat to a bride symbolised happiness and prosperity.

So next time a black cat crosses your path, take it as a positive sign — not a curse!

Why Black Cats Deserve the Spotlight

Despite their glossy coats and golden eyes, black cats remain among the least adopted animals in UK shelters. According to Cats Protection, black cats can wait up to a week longer to find homes than their colourful counterparts.

The reasons?

Superstition: Outdated myths still linger.

Social media bias: Some adopters want pets that “stand out” in photos.

Overpopulation: Black is one of the most common coat colours in cats.

But those who do adopt a black cat often say the same thing — they’re loyal, loving, and full of personality. Many owners describe their sleek companions as affectionate shadows who follow them everywhere.

The Power of the #BlackCatDay Hashtag

Every year, social media lights up with photos, stories, and videos tagged #BlackCatDay and #CatsProtection.

The campaign encourages cat owners to share snapshots of their black cats looking adorable, mysterious, or mischievous — helping shift public perception one post at a time.

Celebrities, influencers, and animal shelters often join in, helping more black cats get noticed and adopted. It’s proof that awareness days really can make a difference.

How You Can Get Involved

You don’t need to own a cat to join the celebration! Here are some simple ways to show your support this National Black Cat Day 2025:

As Britain heads into the final week of October, the weather on Monday 27th October 2025 looks set to offer one of the calmer and more pleasant days of the month. After several damp and windy days in recent weeks, a brief high-pressure ridge will stabilise conditions, bringing clearer skies, crisp starts, and mild sunshine for many regions across the country.

25 August, 2025, Gaydon, Great Britain: Vantage, Aston Martin’s most successful racing car, enjoyed a winning weekend with significant victories in Europe and a crucial podium finish in North America’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (IMSA) that has intensified the battle for the GTD crown as the series nears its climax.

Fresh from achieving its maiden FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) LMGT3 podium finish with the Vantage GT3 at the Rolex 6 hours of Sao Paulo last month, the Racing Spirit of Leman team continued its magnificent recent form with a maiden European Le Mans Series (ELMS) class win at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.

After Clement Mateu qualified third in the LMGT3 category in challenging wet conditions, he joined Erwan Bastard and Aston Martin works driver Valentin Hasse Clot across the four-hour race to finish on the top step of the podium. The victory moved the French trio into the lead of the championship with just two races to go.

In IMSA, Seattle-based partner team The Heart of Racing (THOR) team finished third in the GTD class with its #27 Vantage GT3 after a stirring fightback in the opening third of the race. Having qualified fourth, Casper Stevenson (GBR) was shuffled back to 11th by the second corner after suffering contact from behind.

But he recovered to sixth by the end of the opening stint and his team-mate, Aston Martin works driver Tom Gamble, continued the car’s progress through the following two hours as the pair finished third, less than three seconds away from victory.

The results, achieved in the final IMSA sprint race of the year before the endurance events at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Petit Le Mans, moved Stevenson up to second place in the Drivers’ points and THOR team to second in the Teams’ rankings.

Beechdean Motorsport was victorious in the GT3 Silver-Am category of the British GT Championship at Brands Hatch as drivers Andrew Howard (GBR) and Tom Wood (GBR) increased their lead in the standings with just one race remaining in the 2025 season.

It was the second year in a row in which Beechdean has won the Silver-Am category at Brands Hatch with the Vantage GT3, which shares the mechanical architecture of the ultra-luxury Vantage road car and is built around Aston Martin’s proven bonded aluminium chassis and powered by its fearsome twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine.

The Beechdean Vantage finished fifth outright and was the second of two Vantage GT3s to finish in the top five. The other was Blackthorn’s #7 example, which qualified second overall thanks to the combined efforts of Giacomo Petrobelli (ITA) and Aston Martin works driver Jonny Adam (GBR) and finished fourth as the pair moved into second place in the overall standings while Adam continues his quest to win an unprecedented fifth series title.

Adam Carter, Aston Martin Head of Endurance Motorsport, said: “It’s been a very good weekend for Vantage with wins and podiums in three series that are extremely important to Aston Martin; the ELMS and IMSA, which are leading championships in their respective continents, and in British GT, which has a special place for Aston Martin as an iconic British brand and has been one of our most successful domestic series. These results continue to prove the adaptability and performance of the Vantage GT3 on a variety of circuits and highlight the fantastic job being done by our partner teams. We congratulate them all and will give them – and all AMR partner teams – our full support as they push for title success in their respective championships.”

Major brands like Amazon, JPMorgan Chase and Asda have led the charge, formalising stricter return-to-office policies that signal a broader shift in workplace norms. But for millions of pet owners, this snapback to office culture presents a new dilemma: navigating pet care logistics, rising kennel costs and the emotional toll of leaving animals alone after years of constant companionship.

Milton Keynes – Passion, performance and panache come together in perfect harmony for a special- and limited-edition Volkswagen: the ID.3 GTX Fire & Ice. But you’ll need to be as nippy as the car itself to get your hands on one, because production is limited to just 1,990 units worldwide.

Volkswagen developed the newcomer’s eye-catching design in collaboration with BOGNER, the Munich-based sports fashion brand known for its luxury and high-tech ski wear. It pays tribute to the 1990s Golf Mk2 Fire and Ice, which has since achieved cult status among Volkswagen fans. A show car version was unveiled at the ID. Meeting in Locarno, Switzerland, last year. Now it is going into production and, in tribute to the original model’s debut year, only 1,990 units of the ID.3 GTX Fire & Ice will be built.

The striking ultra-violet metallic paint was developed especially for this unique model and is a similar hue to its legendary Golf forerunner. With a geometric F+I pattern on the C-pillar, plus numerous details in the interior, the ID.3 GTX Fire & Ice honours its predecessor and transfers the original design idea into the all-electric modern age.

Other highlights include 20-inch Locarno alloy wheels with diamond-turned surface, red roof strips in anodised paint, puddle lights in the door mirrors – representing fire on the passenger side and ice on the driver’s side – and the original Fire & Ice logo from the 1990s on the roof spoiler. Volkswagen’s latest-generation LED tail lights are tinted exclusively for this model, while GTX lettering on the tailgate and wheel trims provide exterior finishing touches.

‘Firey’ Flame red and ‘cool’ Floxal blue touches continue the hot and cold theme on the inside, while sports seats with built-in head restraints are inspired by BOGNER FIRE+ICE collections; they are quilted in the style of down jackets and feature the hint of a zip and the FIRE+ICE logo in the centre. The steering wheel, instrument panel, door trims and floor mats are also customised with coloured stitching and logos.

Performance-wise, the Fire & Ice model boasts the same credentials as its ID.3 GTX Performance counterpart. It is available with a 326 PS (240 kW) motor that generates maximum torque of 545 Nm – enough to propel the car from standstill to 62 mph in just 5.7 seconds and achieve an electronically limited top speed of 124 mph (where permitted). The GTX-specific chassis set-up, which is equipped with uprated stabilisers and sport DCC adaptive chassis control, is also tuned to the drive system’s high performance. Electricity is supplied by a 79 kWh (net) lithium-ion battery, which can be topped up at DC fast-charging stations with up to 185 kW – enough to take the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in about 26 minutes. The combined WLTP range is 367 miles.

Daniel Hiendlmeier, Managing Director and Chief Brand Officer of BOGNER, said: “The revival of the cooperation between Volkswagen and BOGNER FIRE+ICE after more than 30 years, and the realisation of a series production model, is a major milestone for us. What started as a show car has become a market-ready vehicle that will excite both fans of the iconic Golf Mk2 Fire and Ice and a new generation. It is a strong statement for the relevance of connecting fashion and mobility.”

Martin Sander, Member of the Volkswagen Board of Management responsible for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, said: “The response to last year’s show car was overwhelming. Many Volkswagen fans expressed a strong desire to see this car enter series production, and we were only too happy to make that wish a reality. The ID.3 GTX Fire & Ice demonstrates the emotive appeal of our premium sports model, while also carrying a piece of Volkswagen history into the electric future.”

The ID.3 GTX Fire & Ice can be ordered at any Volkswagen Retailer from Thursday 7 August, priced £48,360 (on-the-road recommended retail price including VAT).

The Origins of International Cat Day

International Cat Day was first established in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). The aim? To raise awareness around the needs and wellbeing of domestic and stray cats worldwide.

Since then, the celebration has evolved into a global phenomenon, embraced by cat lovers, charities, influencers, and celebrities alike. In 2020, custodianship of the day was passed to International Cat Care, a UK-based charity that has been improving feline welfare since 1958.

By 2025, the event is expected to reach new heights, with the help of social media campaigns, live events, and dedicated cat welfare initiatives taking place across the UK and beyond.

Why We Celebrate Cats

Cats are more than just cute companions — they are intelligent, affectionate, quirky, and full of personality. Here are just a few reasons why cats deserve a day of their own:

They’re great for mental health: Studies show that spending time with cats can reduce stress, anxiety, and even lower blood pressure.

They’re independent but loving: Cats strike a perfect balance between cuddly companionship and autonomous grace.

They have incredible instincts: Cats have highly developed senses, making them expert hunters and curious explorers.

They bring joy to millions: From internet memes to comforting purrs at bedtime, cats make life richer for countless humans.

International Cat Day 2025 Theme
