Shawlands Academy Announced Winners of Buchanan Galleries and Ahead Partnership’s ‘Made in Glasgow’ 2025 Challenge

Team ‘BamBrew’ from Shawlands Academy have been announced as the winners of the 2025 ‘Made in Glasgow’ enterprise challenge.

Made in Glasgow is a cross-school competition, hosted by Buchanan Galleries and Ahead Partnership, where 30 students were tasked to imagine and design an exciting community space for the city before going head-to-head in Dragons’ Den-style pitches. Centred around the theme ‘reimagining their local retail space’, the project challenged Glasgow pupils to present their ideas and vision for retail in the future, while considering the broader impact retail space has on the local area.

Year 10 students from St Mungo’s Academy and Shawlands Academy took part in three workshops at Buchanan Galleries which replicated real-life design processes. This included creative placemaking, community and customer insights, and environmental sustainability hosted by professionals at Buchanan Galleries, before the students developed their own ideas for a retail space to best serve their community in Glasgow.

The final allowed the teams to present their ideas to an expert panel, showcasing the principles learned during the workshops. The pitches addressed all aspects of creating a sustainable retail space, including establishing their concept, understanding their key audience, and shared how they would design and market the space. The final presentations included concept diagrams, mood boards and branding, survey questions for customer research, example social media content and key points on sustainability.

The winning team professionally pitched an innovating café specialising in Matcha Teas. Their concept aimed to tap into the growing popularity of Matcha as a trendy and health-conscious beverage to attract a fresh demographic to Buchanan Galleries – specifically teenagers and students.

‘Made in Glasgow’ aims to showcase the vital role young people can play in transforming the retail landscape into a dynamic force for positive change within their communities. In recent years, physical retail has shifted towards creating experiences, with shopping centres evolving into social hubs that foster and strengthen community connections.

The school engagement project is delivered by Buchanan Galleries, its parent company Landsec, and Ahead Partnership, and is funded by the Landsec Futures Fund. The £20m social impact fund is dedicated to enhancing social value to the communities it serves.

Kathy Murdoch, Centre Director at Buchanan Galleries, said: “Made In Glasgow is a wonderful initiative that encourages students to explore their creativity within the retail sector. Listening to the perspectives of the younger generation offers fresh inspiration for creating retail experiences that resonate with their needs and interests.

“This year, we have been really impressed by the creativity and innovative thinking shown by all the students – and would like to congratulate Team ‘BamBrew’ from Shawlands Academy, who after much deliberation from the judging panel emerged as well-deserving winners.”

“This is the second time the competition has run in Glasgow and helps individuals learn everything they need to know about taking an idea from its first draft to its design and pitch, whilst building self-confidence and skills to further develop their own career paths.”

Georgina Johnson, Programme Manager at Ahead Partnership said: “We have been so impressed by the quality and presentation of the students’ ideas for the second time delivering the Made In Glasgow challenge. Their concepts put community at the heart of the future of retail and incorporated innovative sustainability features that are so important to our places and spaces.

“It has been brilliant to see the Buchanan Galleries and Landsec teams come together to nurture the next generation of talent through employability skills development and role modelling, helping to engage more young people with the careers and opportunities available in the retail sector.”

The winning team will now progress through to the national virtual semi-finals where they’ll compete against teams from other Made In Challenges happening across the UK. The three winning teams from the semi-final will then head to Landsec HQ in London for the national final in-person in June 2025.

The ‘Made in Glasgow’ challenge is a cross-school competition which simulates / mirrors the design process and invites students to imagine an exciting community space for the people of Glasgow. Centred around the theme of ‘reimagining their local retail space’, the project challenges pupils to present their ideas and vision for retail in the future, while considering the broader impact retail space has on the local area.

Students from the two schools will take part in three workshops which replicate real life design processes covering: creative placemaking; community and customer insights; and environmental sustainability hosted by professionals at Buchanan Galleries, before developing their own ideas for a retail space to best serve their community in Glasgow.

The teams will then have an opportunity to present their ideas to an expert panel, showcasing the principles learned during the workshops.
The 2025 launch marks the second year of the challenge, providing an opportunity for 30 Glasgow-based students to benefit from the Landsec Futures Fund.

Kathy Murdoch, Centre Manager at Buchanan Galleries said: “’Made In Glasgow’ is a great initiative that encourages students to explore their creativity within the retail sector. Listening to the perspectives of the younger generation offers fresh inspiration for creating retail experiences that resonate with their needs and interests. We’re really looking forward to seeing the final presentations in March, and the innovative ideas the students develop.

“Working with Ahead Partnership, who have already supported over 10,000 young people through their continued partnership with Landsec, helps us ensure that the work we’re doing has a tangible impact within our local community. This is the second time the competition has run in Glasgow and helps individuals learn everything they need to know about taking an idea from its first draft to its design and pitch, whilst building self-confidence and skills to further develop their own career paths.”

Georgina Johnson, Programme Manager at Ahead Partnership said: “We’re delighted to bring the ‘Made In Glasgow’ challenge to a new cohort of students who are brimming with innovative ideas and unique insights into what they want the future of retail to look like. The feedback we received from last year’s participants demonstrates the importance of giving young people the opportunity to learn directly from employers and engage with businesses in their local area.

“We’re so grateful to the team at Buchanan Galleries for showcasing the many behind-the-scenes careers that support a local landmark, and for empowering young people to explore and present their ideas in a real-life business setting as practice before they enter the world of work.”

The winning team will be announced in March 2025, and will receive a trophy for their school. They will also go through to the national virtual semi-finals where they’ll compete against teams from other Made In Challenges happening across the UK.
Buchanan Galleries is diffusing the luxury brand’s signature ‘Winter’ fragrance – with warming notes of cinnamon, clove and orange – and the ‘Seychelles’ scent – which combines bergamot, orange and fresh coconut, with hints of jasmine, amber and vanilla – to enhance the guest experience.

It is the first partnership of its kind between shopping centres and The White Company, and is in direct response to feedback from shoppers which suggested that fragrances would help enhance their in-centre experience.

Working with ScentAir, the popular fragrances is being diffused during opening hours using special diffusers, focussing on a ‘scent of arrival’ at entranceways, as well as bathrooms and other key areas such as guest services.

Kathy Murdoch, Centre Director at Buchanan Galleries, said: “We want to create memorable moments each time our guests visit, and we are constantly exploring new ways to elevate their experience.

“For us, this means going beyond what people might expect for a shopping centre and bringing our places to life by stimulating the senses – from scents to sounds and tastes to textures.

“The White Company is well-known for its luxurious scents, which have traditionally been filling homes with signature fragrances for years. We want to recreate this welcoming ambiance across our retail destinations, so that guests feel welcomed from the moment they walk in.”

The new scent strategy is in response to feedback from guest surveys, which suggested that fragrances would improve their experience.

Restock3d, a local activewear online retailer launched in a teenager’s bedroom in 2020, opened its first-ever store at Glasgow’s leading shopping centre, Buchanan Galleries.

Specialising in rare, limited edition, and hard-to-find sports items, Restock3d sells jackets, t-shirts, matching sets, and footwear from popular brands such as Nike, Under Armour, Montirex, and Griid.

Founded in 2020 during lockdown by then -16-year-old Glaswegian Finlay Gordon (now 21 years old), Restock3d began as a small business operating from the teenager’s bedroom, where he sold rare trainers via social media, quickly building a loyal customer base.

In 2023, Finlay left University of Glasgow, where he had been studying Accounting and Finance, to dedicate himself full-time to growing the brand. Leveraging the power of social media, Finlay took to the streets of Glasgow to film promotional videos, interviewing the public about his on-trend outfits. He also showcased Restock3d at festivals, raves, and football matches across the world including London, Dublin and Ibiza, attracting attention of the contemporary sportswear fans of all ages.

Through the brand’s TikTok and Instagram pages, Finlay successfully grew Restock3d from a bedroom business to a thriving online store. Now, he’s taken the next step with the brand’s first brick-and-mortar store at Buchanan Galleries.

Finlay Gordon, founder of Restock3d, said, “I had a keen eye for fashion and sportswear from a very young age, and saw early on how social media could take my business to new heights.

“I noticed that there’s ever-increasing demand amongst my friends and people my age for limited-edition and hard-to-find sportswear that looks good worn as part of an everyday lifestyle. Social media has allowed me to reach a community that values exclusivity and style, and I’ve been able to connect with people who appreciate what we offer.

“From starting my business selling just one pair of trainers from my bedroom four years ago, I’m so excited to be finally achieving my goal of opening my first permanent store in my hometown. I’m looking forward to bring the same energy and connection as I have on social, into the store, and meeting and interacting with customers face-to-face.”

Kathy Murdoch, Centre Director at Buchanan Galleries, added, “Glasgow is known for being a vibrant city, and we like to think we reflect that vibrancy back to our guests with our line-up of exciting retailers and brands, from local start-ups to global names.

“Supporting Glaswegian businesses and fostering their success is at the heart of what we do, and we’re thrilled to welcome Restock3d to Buchanan Galleries which will bring something unique and fresh to the centre.

“Finlay’s story and the brand’s energy, perfectly embody Glasgow’s creative and entrepreneurial spirit, and we’re confident it will resonate with our visitors who are always looking for standout shopping experiences and unique finds.”

Santa Claus has marked his calendar to visit Buchanan Galleries this Christmas and find out who’s been naughty or nice.

The Glasgow shopping centre is introducing a Santa’s Grotto, promising to spread joy, wonder and Christmas cheer to families and children throughout the festive season.

In partnership with Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, children of all ages can meet the jolly man in red and his cheerful elves, share their Christmas wishes and snap a keepsake photo. Each child will receive a special gift from Santa himself and have the opportunity to tell him what they’re hoping to receive under the tree this year.

The grotto will be open every weekend from Saturday 7th December until Sunday 22nd December from 11am – 5pm, along with 23rd and 24th December, to ensure little ones of Glasgow can make all of their last-minute requests. On 24th December the grotto will be open from 10am – 1pm.

Entry to the grotto is free, with the option to donate to Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity. All proceeds will go to help fund state-of-the-art medical equipment and life-changing care in the children’s hospital in Glasgow.

Kathy Murdoch, Centre Director at Buchanan Galleries, said: “We’re excited to welcome Santa to Buchanan Galleries this year. Christmas is a wonderful time for families to come together, create cherished memories and enjoy the festive atmosphere, and we’re excited to play a part in spreading the holiday cheer while supporting a great cause close to our hearts and give back to our community.

“The centre is now adorned in twinkling decorations once again and will come alive with festive activities. We can’t wait to see all the smiling faces at Buchanan Galleries over the festive season and wish everyone a very merry Christmas.”

William McGowan, Head of Partnerships at Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “We are thrilled to partner with Buchanan Galleries this Christmas. Santa’s Grotto not only brings joy to the families that visit but also helps to raise vital funds for young patients in Scotland’s busiest children’s hospital. Every donation makes a difference, and we truly appreciate the support from both Buchanan Galleries and the wider community during this festive season.”

Buchanan Galleries is also extending its Christmas hours from 7th December. The centre will be open from 9am – 7pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am – 6pm Sundays from 7th December to 23rd December.

Offering more than 80 shops, Buchanan Galleries is the perfect destination to tick off the Christmas shopping list, including family favourites such as John Lewis & Partners, LEGO and Build-a-Bear Workshop.
