The domains were flagged by the FBI in May 2026 as likely spoofing attempts against FIFA infrastructure. The GSE, the non-profit fraud signal clearing house administered by Oxford Information Labs (OXIL), checked its own data against that list and found a complete match.

The GSE had in fact been watching the threat build for months. Running seven keyword patterns covering FIFA and World Cup variations, plus the typosquats designed to dodge standard filters, it tracked a steady rise in suspicious signals from September 2025, when ticket sales opened, then a sharp spike in the weeks before kick-off.

“The GSE allows us to get sharing right away,” said Raúl Burgos, Security Policy Manager at Meta, speaking at the Global Anti-Scam Summit in Lisbon in June. He noted that agreeing a bilateral data sharing deal with a partner normally takes two years, during which the fraud continues.

That speed was exactly what caught the World Cup network. Visa’s Scam Disruption Practice spotted unusual payment and domain activity ahead of the tournament and shared it with Meta through the GSE. Meta mapped and took down a network of fake Facebook pages promoting fraudulent World Cup sites before they reached fans at scale.

Other partners at the Lisbon summit reported similar results from the same shared infrastructure. GovTech Singapore has contributed 180,000 high-confidence scam signals tied to real cases and financial losses, and other GSE partners have used them to uncover at least 80,000 further scam enablers. Between October 2025 and February 2026, Meta removed more than 30,000 fraudulent entities from Facebook and Instagram driven solely by GovTech’s signals. Microsoft has ingested more than 20 feeds totalling 160 million signals from the GSE marketplace to strengthen its own automated defences.

Fraud does not pause after one win, and neither has the network built to catch it. The GSE has expanded its data architecture from 60 to 95 distinct threat feeds this month. A major portion of the new pipelines comes from an integration with global scambaiting communities, people who deliberately engage fraudsters to disrupt their operations and, in doing so, receive a constant stream of scam screenshots from the public. The GSE now processes those images using AI, pulling out the malicious URL, hosting provider, phone number or crypto wallet buried in each one, and turning them into structured signals members can act on while the scam is still running.

The GSE’s world-leading tech team continuously evolve the platform’s technology. Version 2.8.0, released this month, adds CSV export from the GSE’s Compass query tool, custom dashboards for enterprise users, and new data sources including Cifas, Amazon and a dedicated feed of high-integrity domains linked to actively exploited malware. A push API, due to finish testing shortly, will deliver signals to members the moment they are received.

Lucien Taylor, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer at GSE comments: “It has been a fascinating month, from watching a fraud network get caught out months before the World Cup even began, to hearing from partners in Singapore and Microsoft about the scale of what shared signals can achieve. It’s a real pleasure to hear that kind of feedback but it also tells us there is still a huge job to do, which is exactly why we keep expanding our network and evolving the platform. Fraud does not stand still, and neither can we.”

An England football fan who thought his TV set was to blame for blurry match action has been able to follow the Three Lions this summer, thanks to surgery for a sight-stealing condition.

Leatherhead resident Alan Lowe, aged 79, who describes himself as an armchair fan, bought a bigger TV to watch England play, mistakenly believing his fuzzy sight was down to a poor picture on screen.

The grandfather of two explains: “I noticed the outline of everything had a fuzziness to it. Watching the football just wasn’t as clear as it used to be, so I bought a new TV, but then I still felt something wasn’t quite right. My optician told me it was cataracts, and I could get NHS treatment at SpaMedica near me in Epsom.”

Alan had the sight-saving surgery first on his left eye, followed by the right eye. He said: “It didn’t take long to recover at all, and it definitely made a difference.

“I always go for regular eye check-ups, because I know you can spot other potential conditions too. I think if you’ve got any health issue you should get it sorted, especially as you get older.”

Alan’s story reflects the experiences of many affected by cataracts. Research from SpaMedica found that watching TV is the number one pastime cataract patients struggle to enjoy, with more than half (52%) citing television as the hobby they miss most prior to seeking treatment.

With Alan’s cataracts now treated, he has high hopes for Thomas Tuchel’s squad as they continue their campaign Stateside.

The lifelong Manchester United fan added: “You just don’t know with football, but I think England has got as good a chance as any of the teams competing, after all, they say the Premier League is the best in the world.”

Dr Alex Silvester, leading ophthalmologist and Chief Medical Officer at SpaMedica, believes the international games offer a valuable opportunity to spot the subtle warning signs that a relative’s vision is deteriorating.

“As sight loss can sneak up on you, it may be hard to realise just how much your vision has deteriorated until trying to watch fast-moving and visually detailed action like football on the TV,” says Dr Silvester. “Alan isn’t the only patient who has upgraded his TV believing the problem is with the screen rather than due to vision loss.

“An estimated 3.3 million people in the UK suffer from vision impairment due to cataracts. The good news is that cataracts are treatable. We hear from patients every day who tell us that after the simple surgery they’ve returned to doing and seeing the things they love. In fact, our research found that cataract surgery can improve quality of life significantly, offering a renewed sense of independence and confidence.”

Here are Dr Silvester’s top five red flags to spot whilst watching the summer of football:

Sitting closer to the TV

If someone moves much closer to the TV than usual, a sight condition like cataracts, which can impair distance vision, could be to blame.

Confusing which players are on the ball

Cataracts can cause colours to appear faded and dull. This makes it harder to distinguish between different kits. If a family member is confusing players or teams, this indicates potential vision loss.

Asking about the action

Repeatedly asking about the score, who is being substituted or booked, or how many minutes are left on the clock, signals difficulty reading TV captions. If this wasn’t a problem previously, it’s worth considering an eye test.

Adjusting the TV brightness

Cataracts can cause cloudy vision. Turning the brightness unusually high suggests a struggle with contrast and clarity.

Turning up the TV volume

You might assume this points to potential hearing loss (and you’d be right), but some people may increase volume to follow the commentary, compensating for vision problems.

What are the symptoms of cataracts?

The natural lens in the eye contains proteins that change with age. Eventually, these changes cause the lens to become cloudy and lose its transparency – this is a cataract. Around one third of people in the UK over the age of 65 have a cataract that affects vision in one or both eyes. Symptoms include:

Blurred vision

Difficulty driving at night

Trouble watching television and reading

Sensitivity to bright lights or glare, such as car headlights

Fading of colours

Frequent changes to glasses or contact lens prescriptions

Google search data shows interest in “flights to Miami” spiked at around 4am UK time on Monday, as England sealed their place in Saturday’s quarter-final against Norway and fans began looking at making a last-minute trip to cheer on the Three Lions.

The surge comes as new research from Post Office Travel Money Card reveals football fans are no strangers to making spontaneous spending decisions when their team is winning.

More than a third (37%) of supporters admit they’re more likely to splash out after seeing their team score, with the average fan spending as much as £188 on celebrations, including food, drinks, merchandise and other impulse purchases.

After England found the net three times against Mexico, that could equate to an average celebratory spend of £564 per fan.

The research also suggests the excitement doesn’t stop at the final whistle. More than a third (36%) of supporters admit they’ve woken up after a match and realised they’d spent more than intended, while almost one in three (31%) say they simply enjoy living in the moment when football fever takes hold.

Travelling abroad to watch football is becoming increasingly popular too. Half of fans surveyed said they’ve travelled overseas primarily for a match, while 30% admit they spend more money when supporting their team in another country.

The biggest reasons include being in “holiday mode” (47%), treating the trip as a special occasion (37%) and getting caught up in the atmosphere (37%).

Laura Plunkett, Head of Travel Money at Post Office, said: “Big football moments often lead to spontaneous decisions, whether that’s buying the next round, booking another trip or deciding to follow your team overseas.

“With England now preparing for a huge quarter-final against Norway, it’s no surprise we’re seeing supporters looking at flights to Miami. For anyone making the journey, it’s worth planning how you’ll manage your spending before you travel so you can focus on enjoying the experience.”

She added: “A travel money card lets fans load currency before they leave, track their spending while they’re away and avoid worrying about exchange rates during the tournament.”

With excitement building ahead of Saturday’s knockout clash, it appears many England supporters are already considering turning their World Cup dream into a transatlantic getaway.

New research spanning five decades reveals that the dream of lower league clubs climbing the English football pyramid has all but died, with newly promoted Premier League teams now having just a one-in-three chance of survival.

The romantic notion of the plucky underdog rising through the ranks of English football and establishing themselves in the top flight has become little more than a nostalgic memory. According to comprehensive new research from Betsson analysing fifty years of promotion and relegation data, the odds have shifted so dramatically against newly promoted clubs that the fairy tale ending has become the exception rather than the rule.

The findings paint a stark picture: clubs today are 9.6 times more likely to experience relegation directly after a promotion between English football leagues than they were in 1970. Perhaps most alarmingly, 67% of teams promoted to the Premier League between 2020 and 2025 were relegated immediately—up from just 7% in the late 1970s.

A Financial Chasm Too Wide to Bridge

The numbers represent more than mere statistics; they are a stark wake-up call about the growing financial disparities between the leagues. The gulf between the Premier League and the Championship has widened into a chasm that promoted clubs increasingly find impossible to bridge.

In the 1970s and early 1980s, a promoted club arriving in the top flight could reasonably expect to consolidate its position over several seasons. The financial gap between divisions was manageable, squads were more evenly matched, and the playing field was, if not level, at least navigable. Today, that landscape has been fundamentally transformed.

The Premier League’s astronomical television rights deals, global commercial reach, and ability to attract elite talent from around the world have created an environment where newly promoted clubs often find themselves hopelessly outgunned before a ball has even been kicked.

The Immediate Relegation Crisis

Since the 1970s, the chances of survival for newly promoted clubs have collapsed across the top leagues. The trajectory is unmistakable and deeply concerning for those who value competitive balance in English football.

In the Premier League, the immediate relegation rate has soared from just 7% in the late 1970s to 57% during the formative Premier League years of 1995-99. Today, it stands at a devastating 67%, meaning two out of three promoted clubs have gone straight back down in recent years. Put simply, newly promoted Premier League clubs now have just a one-in-three chance of staying up.

The Championship has followed a similar, if less dramatic, trajectory. The immediate relegation rate remained stable at between 7% and 13% for decades before climbing to 27% in recent years. Nearly one in three clubs are now bouncing straight back to League One.

Source: Betsson analysis of 50 years of English football promotion and relegation data

The Premier League Effect

The 1990s—when the Premier League was founded—marked the turning point when immediate relegation became the norm rather than the exception in English football. The last five years show the worst figures ever recorded.

The creation of the Premier League in 1992 fundamentally altered the economics of English football. The breakaway league’s ability to negotiate its own television rights, independent of the Football League, created a financial disparity that has only grown more pronounced with each passing broadcast cycle.

For clubs arriving in the Premier League from the Championship, the challenge is multifaceted. They must simultaneously compete against squads assembled with vastly superior resources while adapting to a pace and intensity of football that bears little resemblance to what they experienced in the second tier. The margin for error is virtually non-existent.

What This Means for English Football

The implications of this research extend far beyond the fortunes of individual clubs. The data suggests that the promotion and relegation system, long celebrated as one of English football’s defining characteristics, is functioning less as a genuine pathway to establishment at the highest level and more as a revolving door.

For supporters of promoted clubs, the research offers a sobering reality check. The hopes and dreams that accompany a promotion-winning season must now be tempered by the statistical likelihood of an immediate return from whence they came.

For those who govern the game, the findings represent a challenge to the competitive integrity that underpins football’s appeal. If two-thirds of promoted clubs are destined to fail regardless of their efforts, questions must be asked about whether the current financial structures serve the sport’s long-term interests.

The football fairy tale may not be entirely dead, but the research suggests it is on life support—and the prognosis is not encouraging.

Musician, producer, and one-time covert agent Pete Goodall unveils The Jazz Spy — an extraordinary memoir blending music, espionage, and a lifetime at the heart of British and global pop culture.

Born in 1945, Goodall grew up on Merseyside as the son of a GI, a gifted child who could play piano at four and mastered the guitar soon after. By 11, he was performing with local groups — even catching the attention of Brian Epstein and Bob Wooler, who sought to sign him before The Beatles rose to fame. But his father’s wisdom kept him grounded, and Goodall soon carved his own path in the industry.

By 18, he had moved to London, where his precision and ear for perfection made him one of the city’s most sought-after session guitarists. Working alongside names like The Tremeloes, Georgie Fame and The Blue Flames, Thunderclap Newman, Percy Sledge, and The Foundations, Pete quickly became known as “the musician’s musician.”

But behind the music lay a secret life. During the height of the Cold War, Goodall was recruited by MI6, becoming “The Jazz Spy” — a touring musician with a mission. From apartheid South Africa to communist Eastern Europe and beyond the Berlin Wall, his gigs doubled as cover for intelligence work.

After decades in the music business, Goodall founded Pandora Music in Stratford-upon-Avon, collaborating with the Royal Shakespeare Company and continuing to produce acclaimed records, including Pick n Tell, co-written with Cream lyricist Pete Brown. His work under the Speakeasy Label remains highly respected among collectors and jazz enthusiasts alike.

More recently, Pete curated “The Birth of The Beatles”, an acclaimed travelling exhibition featuring 69 historic Liverpool recordings — including the earliest known tracks by The Quarrymen. The show, which includes talks from John Lennon’s sister Julia, continues to tour internationally, delighting Beatles fans across the globe.

Now in his 80s, Goodall shows no signs of slowing down. His next multimedia project, NAKUPENDA — Swahili for “I Love You” — launches October 2026 at Brixton Library, blending art, poetry, and music to explore the legacy of slavery and Black artistry. A UK tour and an appearance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival will follow.

Interest in The Jazz Spy memoir has already drawn attention from major UK and US publishers, and Pete Phillips of The Young Vic has expressed intent to adapt the story for film, television, and radio.

“Most of my friends are dead,” laughs Pete, “but I’m good for a few more battles — just not the spying kind!”
