Purple House Clinic Glasgow announces the opening of its new specialist mental health and neurodiverse services clinic in the heart of Ayr, Ayrshire. Building on the success of its flagship Glasgow city centre clinics, this new location will provide vital support and easy to access, psychological services to people who need help the most across the West Coast of Scotland.

The Ayr clinic will offer a range of services, including neurodevelopmental assessments for autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and learning disabilities, as well as educational psychology assessments for specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia. This clinic will also offer psychological therapies for both children and adults. The expansion responds to the increasing demand for accessible, high-quality psychological support in the region and aims to reduce the pressure on long NHS waiting lists.

Launching with a team of highly skilled specialists, the clinic will look to build a multidisciplinary team to meet the ever-growing local demand for mental health support services and specialist neurodiverse assessments. Services will be delivered by an expert team, including:

Dr Camilla Dyer, Clinical Psychologist

Natalie McCarron, Speech and Language Therapist

Dr Karen Mackenzie, Clinical Psychologist

Jule Smith, Educational Psychologist and Clinical Neuropsychologist

The expansion follows a successful NHS Ayrshire contract win, enabling the clinic to offer much-needed neurodevelopmental assessments for local children. This further cements the clinic’s role in supporting the mental health and developmental needs of the local community.

Dr Michelle Muniz, Clinical Director of Purple House Clinic Glasgow, commented: “We’re delighted to bring our services to Ayrshire and it reflects our commitment to making mental health services more accessible. We’ve seen a growing number of referrals from this area, and with the current strain on NHS services, our goal is to make high-quality, specialist care more accessible and to provide early, effective support to those who need it most.

“The decision to open the clinic in Ayr was driven by a combination of factors, including high demand for services from across the West Coast and accessibility challenges for families travelling to Glasgow. By establishing a presence in Ayr, our clinic aims to provide a more convenient and localised service to those who may otherwise face barriers in accessing care, and ultimately, we can help more people receive the right diagnosis and treatment faster.

“Since 2018, we have provided individualised, accessible psychological services to adults and children across the Glasgow City Region and now we’re really excited to open a new clinic on the West Coast in close proximity to our other locations. The new Ayr clinic will initially consist of one clinic room for assessments, treatments and follow-ups, and a calm, quiet and safe space where people can feel confident in their environment,” added Michelle.

In addition to Ayr, Purple House Clinic Glasgow also has clinics across four locations, including Bath Street and Wellington Street in Glasgow city centre, Bearsden and Newton Mearns.

Purple House Clinic Ayr is located at Suite 7, Wellington House, 24 Wellington Square, Ayr, KA7 1HG.

For more information about the Purple House Clinic and the services offered at the new Ayr clinic, visit www.purplehouseclinic.co.uk/psychologists-glasgow/

Shawlands Academy Announced Winners of Buchanan Galleries and Ahead Partnership’s ‘Made in Glasgow’ 2025 Challenge

Team ‘BamBrew’ from Shawlands Academy have been announced as the winners of the 2025 ‘Made in Glasgow’ enterprise challenge.

Made in Glasgow is a cross-school competition, hosted by Buchanan Galleries and Ahead Partnership, where 30 students were tasked to imagine and design an exciting community space for the city before going head-to-head in Dragons’ Den-style pitches. Centred around the theme ‘reimagining their local retail space’, the project challenged Glasgow pupils to present their ideas and vision for retail in the future, while considering the broader impact retail space has on the local area.

Year 10 students from St Mungo’s Academy and Shawlands Academy took part in three workshops at Buchanan Galleries which replicated real-life design processes. This included creative placemaking, community and customer insights, and environmental sustainability hosted by professionals at Buchanan Galleries, before the students developed their own ideas for a retail space to best serve their community in Glasgow.

The final allowed the teams to present their ideas to an expert panel, showcasing the principles learned during the workshops. The pitches addressed all aspects of creating a sustainable retail space, including establishing their concept, understanding their key audience, and shared how they would design and market the space. The final presentations included concept diagrams, mood boards and branding, survey questions for customer research, example social media content and key points on sustainability.

The winning team professionally pitched an innovating café specialising in Matcha Teas. Their concept aimed to tap into the growing popularity of Matcha as a trendy and health-conscious beverage to attract a fresh demographic to Buchanan Galleries – specifically teenagers and students.

‘Made in Glasgow’ aims to showcase the vital role young people can play in transforming the retail landscape into a dynamic force for positive change within their communities. In recent years, physical retail has shifted towards creating experiences, with shopping centres evolving into social hubs that foster and strengthen community connections.

The school engagement project is delivered by Buchanan Galleries, its parent company Landsec, and Ahead Partnership, and is funded by the Landsec Futures Fund. The £20m social impact fund is dedicated to enhancing social value to the communities it serves.

Kathy Murdoch, Centre Director at Buchanan Galleries, said: “Made In Glasgow is a wonderful initiative that encourages students to explore their creativity within the retail sector. Listening to the perspectives of the younger generation offers fresh inspiration for creating retail experiences that resonate with their needs and interests.

“This year, we have been really impressed by the creativity and innovative thinking shown by all the students – and would like to congratulate Team ‘BamBrew’ from Shawlands Academy, who after much deliberation from the judging panel emerged as well-deserving winners.”

“This is the second time the competition has run in Glasgow and helps individuals learn everything they need to know about taking an idea from its first draft to its design and pitch, whilst building self-confidence and skills to further develop their own career paths.”

Georgina Johnson, Programme Manager at Ahead Partnership said: “We have been so impressed by the quality and presentation of the students’ ideas for the second time delivering the Made In Glasgow challenge. Their concepts put community at the heart of the future of retail and incorporated innovative sustainability features that are so important to our places and spaces.

“It has been brilliant to see the Buchanan Galleries and Landsec teams come together to nurture the next generation of talent through employability skills development and role modelling, helping to engage more young people with the careers and opportunities available in the retail sector.”

The winning team will now progress through to the national virtual semi-finals where they’ll compete against teams from other Made In Challenges happening across the UK. The three winning teams from the semi-final will then head to Landsec HQ in London for the national final in-person in June 2025.

Three local causes and community initiatives have received financial support from Glasgow shopping centre Buchanan Galleries to help them continue to make a difference addressing key local challenges and foster positive change in the area.

As part of Landsec Futures Community Grants scheme, set up by Buchanan Galleries’ owners, Landsec, three local community groups: Clyde FC Community Foundation, Men Matter Scotland, and Nostalgia have received funding to support their efforts in enriching and improving the lives of residents in and around Glasgow.

Clyde FC Community Foundation, official charity of Clyde Football Club, known locally as ‘the Bully Wee’, uses the power of football to improve fitness, education, and inclusion to the sport in the Greater Glasgow area. The grant will allow the organisation to extend its Healthy Heros programme, a mixture of fitness activities and healthy lifestyle education, alongside their innovative Talking Football programme, which provides an opportunity to show how literacy rich football is and how many jobs are available in sports, beyond playing, to more schools where the health and educational deprivation indicators demonstrate the greatest need.

Alan White, Charity Development Manager at Clyde FC Community Foundation, said “Through our work over the years, we have seen the transformative impact that sport can have in schools, both in relation to improving physical health but also to engage young people in topics such as literacy, numeracy and healthy lifestyles.

“We have also recognised that some schools – often based in the communities where need is greatest – simply do not have the budget to provide these sorts of interventions and young people who may feel the impact the most are not benefiting. The funding from Buchanan Galleries allows us to go into schools in some of the communities in Glasgow where we know the demand is present, but the budget is not!”

Men Matter Scotland focusses on supporting men’s mental health and well-being through peer-to-peer engagement from its base, the Hub, in Drumchapel. Open to men aged 16 and up, the charity provides a safe and inclusive environment where men can connect, share experiences, and support each other, whilst take part in physical health activities, workshops and skill building, as well as wider community engagement.

Anne Hughes, Director of Men Matter Scotland, commented, “In Scotland, the suicide rate among men remains worryingly high, this is due to factors such as urban deprivation and social isolation.

“We are delighted to be awarded this funding via the Landsec Futures Community Grant. Every week, up to 400 men attend our Hub in Glasgow, and this additional donation from Buchanan Galleries will help provide a variety of different wellbeing classes – everything from yoga and meditation to skill-building workshops, physical activities and sports.”

Rutherglen based community group, Nostalgia, works with older people and sheltered and care home residents to alleviate loneliness and social isolation. Nostalgia aims to encourage meaningful connections between residents through conversations and engaging group activities, giving members of the community the chance to make new friends and build support networks.

Philanthropist, Geraldine Baird, added: “At Nostalgia, we work to foster a sense of belonging amongst the most vulnerable members of our community in Rutherglen by hosting events that help spark old memories and new relationships.

“Over 160 elderly socially isolated people and carers attended our last Christmas event, which demonstrates the longing this generation have for meaningful connections.

“The additional funding from Buchanan Galleries will help us deliver more free events to older people and care home residents and give them the chance to forge new connections and meaningful relationships and help to eradicate social isolation and loneliness.”

Kathy Murdoch, Centre Director at Buchanan Galleries, said, “As a hub for the Glasgow community, Buchanan Galleries is deeply committed to supporting initiatives that create meaningful change in people’s lives.

“The Landsec Futures Community Grants allow us to directly contribute to the incredible work of local groups like Clyde FC Community Foundation, Men Matter Scotland, and Nostalgia. These organisations are driving positive change in areas that matter most – whether it’s through improving mental and physical health, fostering inclusivity, or addressing social isolation – and we’re proud to play a part in helping them expand their reach and deepen their impact across Glasgow.”

The Landsec Futures Community Grants scheme provides funding between £1,000 and £3,000 to support local voluntary groups and not-for-profit organisations in the community which are already creating value in the places they know best. Applications remain open for the scheme. To apply and for more details, visit: https://landsec.com/futures.

Buchanan Galleries has joined forces with The White Company in a pioneering new partnership that’s not to be sniffed at.

Buchanan Galleries is diffusing the luxury brand’s signature ‘Winter’ fragrance – with warming notes of cinnamon, clove and orange – and the ‘Seychelles’ scent – which combines bergamot, orange and fresh coconut, with hints of jasmine, amber and vanilla – to enhance the guest experience.

It is the first partnership of its kind between shopping centres and The White Company, and is in direct response to feedback from shoppers which suggested that fragrances would help enhance their in-centre experience.

Working with ScentAir, the popular fragrances is being diffused during opening hours using special diffusers, focussing on a ‘scent of arrival’ at entranceways, as well as bathrooms and other key areas such as guest services.

Kathy Murdoch, Centre Director at Buchanan Galleries, said: “We want to create memorable moments each time our guests visit, and we are constantly exploring new ways to elevate their experience.

“For us, this means going beyond what people might expect for a shopping centre and bringing our places to life by stimulating the senses – from scents to sounds and tastes to textures.

“The White Company is well-known for its luxurious scents, which have traditionally been filling homes with signature fragrances for years. We want to recreate this welcoming ambiance across our retail destinations, so that guests feel welcomed from the moment they walk in.”

The new scent strategy is in response to feedback from guest surveys, which suggested that fragrances would improve their experience.

The former Hunters Quay Hotel in Dunoon, a 10-bedroom Victorian-built property with sea views that was once owned by tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton, is to go up for sale by auction this month.

The hotel closed in 2020 during the pandemic and has never reopened since. Now, with a £430,000 guide price, the imposing residential property will feature among some 240 other properties and plots of land in the next online live-streamed sale to be held by SDL Property Auctions, on 26 September.

Situated on a 0.4-acre site and with more than 4,000 sq ft of living space, the former Hunters Quay Hotel retains many of its original ornate features including a grand carved wooden and wrought iron staircase, ceiling mouldings and cupola.

Auctioneers at SDL Property Auctions say the former hotel, which was built in 1865 and last renovated in 2004, could have potential for a range of different uses, from luxury apartments, a return to being a single grand residence, or as a wedding venue or a care home, subject to a buyer obtaining the necessary planning consent.

Andrew Parker, auctioneer and partner at SDL Property Auctions, said: “This is an absolute gem of a heritage property that’s also in a wonderful location. With views out over the Firth of Clyde and situated on the doorstep of the unique landscapes and islands that make up this part of the West of Scotland, a 40-minute car-ferry crossing gives easy access to Gourock, from where it’s only a 45-minute drive to central Glasgow.”

He added: “Not surprisingly we have had interest from several potential buyers and we are excited to see what the next chapter holds for this outstanding historic building.”

For more information about the former Dunoon hotel, or to register to bid remotely online, on the phone or by proxy, go to sdlauctions.co.uk. The auction will be live streamed online on 26 September with bidder registration closing on 25 September.

Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity mascot, Kami Bear, is taking over the charity’s annual sponsored walk to host the first Kami Bear’s Teddy Trail in Glasgow on 14th September.

The unique event invites individuals, families and friends to lace up their walking shoes, bring along their favourite teddy bear, and join in on a day filled with fun, teddies, and community spirit – all whilst raising money for Scotland’s busiest children’s hospital.

Partakers will be joined by patients at The Royal Hospital for Children, including Millie, who will be leading the walk with Kami Bear, alongside her mum and dad and her teddy bear, Maisie.

Millie was delivered at 26 weeks via emergency C-section due to severe ill maternal health caused by Covid. Her mum (Steph) was put into a medically induced coma and didn’t get to meet her daughter until five days after she was born. Millie spent the first 11 weeks of her life in neonatal intensive care and had to spend her first ever Christmas in hospital. Thanks to funding provided by Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, families are able to stay connected to their babies in NICU via a secure video-messaging service, which became a lifeline to Millie’s parents. Millie still attends regular hospital appointments to treat her chronic lung disease, but she doesn’t let her health challenges stop her, and she is so excited to lead out Kami Bear’s Teddy Trail this year.

Participants can choose between a 5K or 10K walk through the scenic routes of Glasgow City Centre. Starting from the Riverside Museum at 10am on 14th September, the walk with Kami Bear offers a chance to explore Glasgow’s beautiful surroundings, raise money for a good cause, all while being accompanied by a hug of teddies. Opportunities to purchase bear wear during the walk, including a range of knitted bear ears and mitts will also be available, along with a Kami Bear teddy.

Both walking routes are fully accessible, and the trail is intended for people of all ages and abilities. Registration is £10 for adults, with all children aged 16 and under can join for free.

On Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th August, Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity will be visiting Buchanan Galleries to host a promotional event for Kami Bear’s Teddy Trail.

Visitors to the centre during the weekend can register for the charity walk and find out more about Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity and its vital work supporting brave young patients at Scotland’s largest children’s hospital. Kami Bear will also be making an appearance on Saturday 24th, for photo opportunities.

Participants in Kami Bear’s Teddy Trail will also be able to collect their trail pack at Buchanan Galleries, which includes additional information about the sponsored walk, and what to expect.

William McGowan, Head of Partnerships & Business Development at Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “We are delighted to welcome our fantastic team of walkers to Buchanan Galleries this weekend to collect their trail packs, and to encourage other visitors to join us at Kami Bear’s Teddy Trail. Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity is the proud charity partner of Buchanan Galleries, and we are very grateful for their help promoting this year’s event. Make sure to join our own Kami Bear on his Teddy Trail across Glasgow this September and help raise money for the babies and young people treated at Glasgow children’s hospital.”

Kathy Murdoch, Centre Director at Buchanan Galleries, said: “We’re proud to continue to support Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity and provide a platform for the charity to promote their fundraising efforts. The event at Buchanan Galleries this weekend offers visitors a fantastic opportunity to find out more about our charity partner and the admirable work they do for the children of Glasgow, as well as sign up to their Kami Bear’s Teddy Trail. Whether you’re an avid walker or just looking for a fun day out, we encourage everyone to join Kami Bear as he takes to the streets in September, in support of Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity and make a real difference to children’s lives.”

Funds raised from Kami Bear’s Teddy Trail will directly support The Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, providing life-changing projects, services, and medical equipment for children with serious illnesses and their families. For over 20 years, Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity has tirelessly supported young patients, their families and the NHS heroes who care for them with donations from the public.

Participants can register for Kami Bear’s Teddy Trail at Buchanan Galleries on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th August.
