MINI John Cooper Works and Bulldog Racing are ready for the toughest race in the world. The top performance of MINI John Cooper Works and an exclusive outer skin create the best conditions for delivering top performance and reliability at the 53rd edition of the 24 Hours Race at the legendary Nürburgring.

Nürburg. It is one of the most spectacular events on the racing calendar: the 24 Hours Race at the Nürburgring enters its 53rd round in 2025. Around 130 racing cars compete in various classes on one of the longest racetracks in the world. 24 hours, around the clock. MINI John Cooper Works, together with the Bulldog Racing Team, is once again bringing a racing car to the starting line after last year’s brilliant class victory – and after intensive preparations is ready for the ultimate endurance test on the 25.378 kilometre long circuit of the ‘Green Hell’.

MINI JCW x Deus: On the starting line with an exclusive livery.
For this year’s 24-hour race, the high-performance focus of MINI John Cooper Works will be combined with the passion and craftsmanship of Deus Ex Machina: At the starting line, the MINI John Cooper Works race car will cause a stir and be the first highlight of the race with a specially designed livery by Deus Ex Machina.

The racing car is equipped with original MINI John Cooper Works accessories, such as the JCW roof edge spoiler attachment, sporty JCW front, side skirts and rear winglets as well as the MINI JCW trim for the C-pillar. The aerodynamic and exterior components, which are also available for the standard vehicle, create a maximum racing feeling and give the vehicle an individual and high-quality appearance. The exclusive components in high-gloss black and the MINI JCW tow strip complement the consistent look of the MINI JCW x Deus racing car.

The fact that MINI John Cooper Works and the Bulldog Racing team can celebrate success together was impressively demonstrated last year: In 2024, the #317 MINI John Cooper Works Pro triumphed in the SP-3T class at the Nürburgring in the 24-hour race. Last year’s victory is just the latest chapter in MINI’s rich racing history – and is set to continue successfully in 2025.

Hundreds of thousands expected at the race track.
As the enthusiasm, anticipation and excitement for the 24 Hours Race at the Nürburgring grows once again, John Cooper Works and Bulldog Racing are lining up to reignite the same excitement among fans and motorsport enthusiasts on the track. This year, well over 200,000 people will once again watch the classic race from the track.

Munich. Snow-capped peaks and glistening ice surfaces promise adrenaline-filled pleasure in winter sports. Conditions that also invite one to enjoy the winter in a particularly emotional way in the MINI John Cooper Works. The new equipment components for the powerful three-door MINI in high-gloss Black and Chili Red set particularly striking accents against a snow-white landscape. But even in any other season, aerodynamically optimised details and racing-inspired design draw attention to themselves.

Maximum driving dynamics and safety in any weather.
The distinctly sporty MINI John Cooper Works impresses with a four-cylinder TwinPower Turbo petrol engine and 170 kW/231 hp, even on snow and ice, with impressive driving characteristics. The chassis technology developed with racing expertise conveys the legendary go-kart feeling in demanding road conditions and at the same time ensures safe driving fun. The maximum torque of 380 Nm accelerates the MINI John Cooper Works (combined fuel consumption: 6.8 – 6.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 154 – 147 g/km according to WLTP) from a standstill to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds. The top speed is reached at 250 km/h.

Original John Cooper Works accessories for performance-optimised aerodynamics.
The extremely sporty orientation can be further enhanced by John Cooper Works aerodynamic components. High-quality winglets for the front and rear bumpers as well as the side skirts strengthen the character of the vehicle. The shape and design of the air guidance elements were developed specifically for the MINI John Cooper Works. In high-gloss Black and Chili Red and together with the JCW roof spoiler and the JCW rear diffusor, they set contrasting motorsport accents. The newly designed JCW element for the C-pillar makes the vehicle appear more powerful.

The long motorsport history of MINI John Cooper Works dates back to the 1960s. As early as January 1964, the classic Mini demonstrated its feel for snow on the Col de Turini in the icy hairpin bends of the French Maritime Alps during the Monte Carlo Rally. With the overall victory that followed, Paddy Hopkirk made the Mini a motorsport legend. Timo Mäkinen and Rauno Aaltonen repeated the triumph in 1965 and 1967.

Puristic design with enhanced motorsport flair.
The racing-oriented design of the MINI John Cooper Works keeps the successful history present to this day. The new JCW-specific foiling underlines the unparalleled performance of the model. Asymmetrical stripes in Chili Red on the bonnet, the body side and the rear of the vehicle give the MINI John Cooper Works an individual character.

On the black front grille, the red MINI JCW tow strap with a black JCW logo can make a decorative statement. The design of the high-quality accessory comes from rally sport. Black and red JCW exterior mirror caps with a chequered flag design reference the motorsport history and round off the exclusive look of the MINI John Cooper Works.

The 17-inch complete winter wheels with the JCW Star Spoke design ensure the necessary grip on slippery roads. A fixed JCW hub cover keeps the JCW logo horizontal in the centre of the rim during driving, providing a visual highlight. In addition, red MINI valve caps with the JCW logo offer secure protection.

The diverse accessory programme for the MINI John Cooper Works offers exclusive equipment options with which motorsport enthusiasts can enjoy maximum sporty driving fun with individual accents.

With the new MINI John Cooper Works models, motorsport enthusiasts now have for the first time the choice between two fully electric models and three petrol-powered models with powerful four-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engines. Regardless of the drive train, all of MINI’s high-performance models share the unparalleled driving dynamics, racing-inspired suspension technology, and the exclusive and aerodynamically optimized design.

Note: This press release is a 1:1 copy of the original issued by BMW headquarters in Germany. No adaptions have been made to cater to the UK market.

Munich. The five current MINI John Cooper Works models symbolize pure driving fun in its most powerful form and a unique driving experience. With the MINI John Cooper Works Electric and the MINI John Cooper Works Aceman, two fully electric John Cooper Works models are now part of the MINI product portfolio for the first time. The powerful electric drives open a new chapter in the brand’s long history and demonstrate its ongoing commitment to performance and innovation. The MINI John Cooper Works and the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible provide driving fun with a powerful TwinPower Turbo engine. In the MINI John Cooper Works Countryman ALL4, enthusiasts can also enjoy driving off-road thanks to the ALL4 all-wheel drive.

The MINI John Cooper Works Electric and the MINI John Cooper Works Aceman: Electric high performance in a new dimension.
The vehicle architecture of the fully electric MINI models is perfectly suited for the brand’s consistently performance-oriented character. Both models provide an additional 20 kW of motor power via an electric boost function, allowing for particularly dynamic acceleration. The JCW-specific suspension tuning maximizes the typical MINI go-kart feeling and guarantees agile handling. High-performance tires are part of the standard equipment of both models.

Exclusive equipment details emphasize the emotional connection to the brand’s traditional motorsport heritage. These include the red-white-black John Cooper Works logo in the style of a checkered flag from motorsports, as well as a JCW-specific Multitone Roof with a red-black color gradient. Black side skirts, model-specific aeroblades at the C-pillar, and the accentuated rear spoiler optimize the aerodynamics for increased range. The three-door MINI John Cooper Works Electric achieves 371 kilometers, while the five-door MINI John Cooper Works Aceman can drive up to 355 kilometers on a single battery charge.

MINI John Cooper Works and MINI John Cooper Works Convertible: Legendary go-kart feeling with powerful acceleration.
A four-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine with a displacement of two liters, 170 kW/231 hp, and 380 Nm of torque offers maximum driving fun and top performance in both the MINI John Cooper Works (combined fuel consumption: 6.8 – 6.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 154 – 147 g/km according to WLTP) and the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible (combined fuel consumption: 7.1 – 6.8 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 161 – 155 g/km according to WLTP). The sportily tuned dual-clutch automatic transmission translates the engine power into particularly dynamic gear changes. The MINI John Cooper Works takes 6.1 seconds and the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible 6.4 seconds to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h. The top speed of the MINI John Cooper Works is 250 km/h, the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible reaches 245 km/h. For boundless open-air driving pleasure, the softtop of the Convertible can be fully retracted in just 18 seconds at speeds of up to 30 km/h.

The large octagonal high-gloss black front grille with wide air vents for efficient engine cooling and the modern JCW logo dominates the front view of both models. Red-colored inserts in the side air inlets on the front apron underscore the motorsport-oriented design for maximum performance. In the center of the black rear diffuser, the centrally positioned tailpipe emphasizes the character of the two top athletes.

MINI John Cooper Works Countryman ALL4:
Extraordinary driving fun on any terrain.
As the largest model, the MINI John Cooper Works Countryman with ALL4 all-wheel drive (combined fuel consumption: 8.3 – 7.8 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO2 emissions: 187-177 g/km) stands for a unique combination of style, power, and adventurous spirit. The powerful engine delivers 221 kW/300 HP of power, 400 Nm of maximum torque, and a top speed of 250 km/h, making the appearance of MINI’s spacious multi-talent particularly emotional.

This performance is also reflected in the powerful appearance of the MINI John Cooper Works Countryman ALL4. The black JCW sports steering wheel with red decorative stitching and a six o’clock spoke made of black and red fabric provides excellent grip. The JCW sports seats offer secure support during dynamic driving. The combination of black leatherette with multi-colored knitted material in the shoulder area and red accent stitching picks up the color pattern of the knitted surface of the dashboard. In all MINI John Cooper Works models, the brilliant sound of the exclusive Harman Kardon sound system enhances the driving experience as standard.

Advanced technology for maximum and comfortable driving pleasure.
The JCW-specific go-kart mode expands the selection options of the MINI Experience Modes in the vehicles of the new MINI John Cooper Works family with additional motorsport flair. The steering is set to a more direct setting, the accelerator pedal responds faster to commands for increased driving fun. Accordingly, the high-resolution OLED display provides additional performance-related data such as torque, power output, and current g-force.

This allows the vehicle to be comfortably unlocked or locked without having to pick up the smartphone. For the MINI John Cooper Works Electric as well as the MINI John Cooper Works Aceman, the Remote Parking function also offers a convenient option to park and unpark the vehicle via the smartphone.

Long racing tradition with legendary successes.
The history of MINI John Cooper Works dates back to the year 1961. The John Cooper recognized the competitive potential of the classic Mini long before anyone else. By installing a more powerful engine, new brakes, and a more direct steering, he turned the modest small car into a race car that made the giants of the rally scene tremble in the 1960s. The three overall victories at the legendary Rallye Monte Carlo in 1964, 1965, and 1967 are among the absolute highlights of the classic Mini’s racing career. The current generation now carries the successful racing history into the future. Most recently with the impressive class victory of a prototype based on the new MINI John Cooper Works at the legendary 24-hour race at the Nürburgring. Regardless of the model, all high-performance vehicles in the new MINI John Cooper Works family exude one decisive characteristic: the enthusiasm for top performance.

Maximum John Cooper Works Performance.
In keeping with John Cooper Works models of the past, the latest MINI John Cooper Works and MINI John Cooper Works Convertible carry over the anticipated go-kart handling and performance from previous generations.

A 2.0l, four-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine powers both the MINI John Cooper Works (consumption combined: 6.8 – 6.5 l/62 miles; CO2 emissions combined: 154 – 147 g/km according to WLTP) and MINI John Cooper Works Convertible (combined fuel consumption: 7.1 – 6.8/62 miles; CO2 emissions combined: 161 – 155 g/km according to WLTP), producing 231hp and 380Nm of torque. Both models receive an additional 74hp when compared with the MINI Cooper C and MINI Cooper C Convertible.

The MINI John Cooper Works offers a 0-62mph time of 6.1 seconds and a top speed of 155mph, while the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible hits 0-62mph in 6.4 seconds and has a top speed of 152mph. To allow for a more dynamic acceleration, the new John Cooper Works models receive a dual-clutch automatic transmission and enhanced suspension to increase handling ability.

A purist design exterior.
The iconic exterior appearance of the MINI Cooper has remained consistent in these latest models but elevated further to meet the high standards of the John Cooper Works badge. A centrally mounted single-exit exhaust system is offered for the first time, alongside a sculpted black rear diffuser, red JCW branded brake callipers and additional alloy wheel options.

The MINI John Cooper Works comes as standard with 17” JCW Sprint Spoke alloy wheels in black, Chili Red exterior paint and an aerodynamically shaped rear spoiler. 18” JCW Lap Spoke 2-tone wheels are available optionally, alongside six other body colours.

The MINI John Cooper Works Convertible is offered as standard with Chili Red exterior paint, 17” JCW Sprint Spoke alloy wheels and a choice of seven further body colours optionally, including model exclusive Cooper Grey.

Both cars have an option of Jet Black or Chili Red mirror caps, while LED headlights – with daytime horizontal JCW specific running lights – come as standard to complete the exterior.

Race-inspired interior.
The purist design of the exterior is continued throughout the inside of the vehicles, with a Vescin/Cord combination in JCW black with red accents. The John Cooper Works seats are upholstered in black synthetic leather with knitted red stitching which provide firm support for dynamic driving. A knitted surface on the dashboard and seats offer a chequered flag pattern, nodding back to the motorsport roots of John Cooper Works, alongside stainless-steel pedals and a JCW sport steering wheel with branded six-o’clock fabric spoke.

The interior is focused on the high-resolution OLED display and toggle bar found in the rest of the MINI family. The new 24cm central instrument display provides relevant information at all times and can be easily operated by the driver and passenger. MINI Experience Modes – Vivid, Core, Green, Timeless, Balance and Personal allow the ambience in the interior to be customised to further the personalisation of the cars, while new JCW mode additionally shows performance related data including power, torque, engine temperature and a G-Force meter.

Offering an increase in standard specification, both models receive Level 1 as standard, which includes a Head-Up display, Wireless Charging, High Beam Assist, Heated Front Seats and Exterior Mirror Package. Each model additionally receives Harmon Kardon as standard.

Advanced assistance systems.
Both John Cooper Works variants are well-equipped as standard to support the driver. Thanks to 12 ultrasonic sensors and four surround view cameras, the vehicle can identify real-world traffic conditions such as automatic speed and distance control as well as aiding the driver when it comes to parking, offering the chance to indicate automatic parking manoeuvres independently as a part of Parking Assistant Plus. Sensors also aid the driver when driving at high speed, with steering and lane keeping as standard. Equipped in this way, the MINI John Cooper Works models combine dynamic driving fun with safe comfort and usability for daily driving.

The MINI John Cooper Works and MINI John Cooper Works Convertible are available to order from retailers now, with pricing starting from £31,200 RRP and £35,200 RRP respectively.

Following the successful launch of the all-new MINI family throughout the past year, the new MINI Cooper Convertible completes the brands new model family. Offered in a choice of two new petrol models, the MINI Cooper Convertible will begin production at MINI Plant Oxford later this year, following a nine-year hiatus.

“We are very proud to be able to offer our customers a true convertible in the current MINI family. Our new MINI Cooper Convertible offers unmistakable, hallmark driving fun, coupled with boundless freedom and great emotions: Always Open. Iconic design combined with modern technology and connectivity make this vehicle an unrivalled experience for our customers,” says Stefan Richmann, Head of the MINI brand.

With clean surfaces, a fully automatic soft top roof and a minimalist yet innovative interior, the MINI Cooper Convertible offers drivers an added dose of spontaneity, with the ability to drop in the roof in seconds.

The new MINI Cooper Convertible will be built at MINI Plant Oxford, with first deliveries taking place in early 2025. Available in three trim levels, the new MINI Cooper Convertible is priced from £26,200 RRP.

Two powerful petrol engines for iconic driving fun.
The new MINI Cooper Convertible is offered with a choice of two advanced petrol engines. The MINI Cooper Convertible C (combined fuel consumption:: 6.6 – 6.5 l/62 miles; CO2 emissions combined: 150 – 147 g/km according to WLTP; CO2 class: E) has a power output of 120 kW/163 hp, a maximum torque of 250 Nm (221 lb/ft) and accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 8.2 seconds, with a top speed of 137 mph.

The performance-enhanced MINI Cooper Convertible S (fuel consumption combined: 6.6 – 6.5 l/62 miles; CO2 emissions combined: 150 – 148 g/km according to WLTP; CO2 class: E) has a power output of 150 kW/204 hp, accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 6.9 seconds, has a maximum torque of 300 Nm (221 lb/ft), and a top speed of 150 mph.

The MINI Cooper Convertible offers brilliant driving dynamics thanks to the model’s suspension and damping system which is tuned for nimble handling. The vehicle offers drivers precise steering thanks to the highly preloaded anti-roll bar mounts on the axles, providing a well-balanced ride for ultimate comfort.

Exterior Design: Compact proportions and short overhangs.
With its iconic round headlights, newly designed front grille and circular LED headlights – availably optionally with three customisable light signatures – the body of the MINI Cooper Convertible remains unmistakable. Characterised by short overhangs and a long wheelbase, the body is given a generous appearance despite its small exterior dimensions of just 3,879 mm in length, 1,431 mm in height and 1,744 mm in width.

Fully automatic soft top for spontaneous adventure.
The new MINI Cooper Convertible offers a fully automatic soft top roof, and with its extremely quiet drive, the folding roof can be fully opened in just 18 seconds while travelling at up to 19 mph. At the same time, the window bars and side windows are lowered to provide a completely unobstructed view of the surroundings. The roof can also be opened to just 40cm, providing a sunroof, while the full roof closes in just 15 seconds at the touch of a button.

When the soft top is open, the MINI Cooper Convertible has a luggage compartment volume of 160 litres, while when the soft top is closed this expands to 215 litres. To assist with loading, the tailgate opens downwards and the wind deflector behind the driver and passenger seats reduces wind noise and unwanted air turbulence when driving.

Concealed behind the headrests at the rear of the MINI Cooper Convertible, the integrated rollover protection system is activated automatically as soon as the central safety electronics detect a risk of rollover.

Three individual trims.
The MINI Cooper Convertible is available in three trims: Classic, Exclusive and Sport, with each trim offering a choice of interior and exterior options. Classic trim features a back-trimmed front grille, 16” 4 Square Spoke Alloy wheels on Cooper C or 17” U-Spoke Dark Grey Alloy wheels on Cooper S, Melting Silver exterior body colour and Black/Blue Vescin cloth combination seats and dashboard knit as standard.

Exclusive trim offers a Vibrant Silver front grille and MINI logos on the front and rear of the vehicle, 17” U Spoke Grey Alloy wheels, British Racing Green exterior body colour, Nightshade Blue Vescin seats and a Light Beige/Grey Dash dashboard knit.

Finally, Sport trim offers a performance inspired appearance with a distinctive front and rear design. A high gloss hexagonal patterned front grille surround, front and rear apron, and Black brake callipers with JCW badging are all offered as standard. 18” JCW Lap Spoke 2-Tone Alloy Wheels and Chili Red exterior body colour complete the exterior design.

Inside the cabin, Sport trim offers JCW Black Vescin/cord combination seats, a JCW black/red dashboard knit, partially perforated steering wheel with red accents and a decorative strap in black/red knit and finally shift paddles on the steering wheel, highlighting the performance inspired nature of this trim.

Minimalist yet innovative interior
The interior design of the new MINI Cooper Convertible focuses on fewer components, clever design, and high-quality workmanship. Three key elements structure the cockpit: a sporty steering wheel, the central OLED display, and the newly designed toggle switch bar.

The textile surfaces in the cockpit are based on a newly developed knitted material which is made from recycled polyester, while the optional Head-Up Display projects all relevant information into the drivers’ field of vision, resulting in a cleaner, more streamlined dashboard.

High-resolution OLED display with touch function.
The new central 9.5” display in the cockpit allows both the driver and front passenger to operate all vehicle functions conveniently by touch or voice. The temperature is shown permanently for the driver and front passenger at the left and right-hand edge of the screen and are always integrated at the top level of the MINI Interaction Unit. The lower area of the OLED display is dedicated to Navigation, Media, Telephone and Climate so they can be selected at any time.

In the Home menu, other widgets are displayed in thumbnail view to the left and right of the current menu function. Swiping up from the lower edge of the screen reveals a tool belt where favourite functions can be stored and called up rapidly. All other functions can be accessed via the menu with the display returning to the default setting via the home button.

The toggle switch bar in the centre of the cockpit is a classic MINI feature where five individually designed toggle switches provide direct access to the vehicles most important driving functions (parking brake, gear selector, start/stop button, Experience Mode toggle, volume control). This eliminates the need for an additional gear selector, providing additional stowage space and wireless charging for a smartphone.

New MINI Experiences Modes.
Seven MINI Experience Modes can be selected to change the interior ambience of the MINI Cooper Convertible – even with the top down. To achieve this, two projector units behind the round instrument panel beam illuminated graphics with different patterns and colours onto the dashboard when the top is closed. Changes are made to the colour scheme of the light patterns and to the ambient lighting in the entire interior depending on the Experience Mode selected.

In Go Kart Mode, the focus is on MINI’s racing DNA with the colours dominated by black and red, whereas Personal Mode offers a personalised interior design with the option to upload a personal photo via the MINI App. Core, Green, Vivid, Timeless and Balance mode are also available on the MINI Cooper Convertible.

The new MINI Intelligent Personal Assistant.
A spoken “Hey MINI!” activates the first fully-fledged voice assistant of the brand in the MINI Cooper Convertible. Navigation, telephony, entertainment, and numerous vehicle functions can be controlled simply and conveniently by speaking the relevant command to either a stylised MINI or the character “Spike”.

The MINI Intelligent Personal Assistant learns continuously through dialogue and can take on day-to-day tasks on repeated routes.

Digital Services.
The innovative MINI Digital Key Plus function enables customers to use their smartphones as a car key via the MINI app. The welcome animation of the front and rear lights begins as soon as the driver is less than three metres away while the doors are unlocked when the driver is less than one and a half metres. This convenient feature can be digitally transferred to different users, including their personal vehicle settings.

Oxford. This summer MINI Plant Oxford is supporting OxTrail 2024 – an exciting Oxfordshire initiative organised by local charity Sobell House Hospice to raise important funds for their work.

The trail sees a series of Ox sculptures placed around Oxfordshire, with each having being individually designed by either an artist or local school. Following their design, expert associates at MINI Plant Oxford then hand-sprayed the sculptures with a glossy and protective clear coat to ensure a flawless finish.

From 6th July – 29th August, the OxTrail sculptures will be on display around Oxfordshire for visitors to enjoy. Following this, each sculpture will be auctioned off with proceeds going to support the incredible work of Sobell House Hospice.

Sobell House Hospice offers specialist palliative care for those facing life-threatening illness, death and bereavement. They care for around 3,000 people a year, with their mission to enrich the lives of patients and their loved ones.

Speaking on the collaboration between OxTrail 2024 and the Paint Shop, Plant Director of Plants Oxford and Swindon, Dr. Markus Grüneisl, said “We’re thrilled to have lent our paint shop services to the OxTrail. This brilliant initiative helps raise vital funds for Sobell House Hospice, and it’s been great to see the MINI team spirit in full flow as our associates have supported the project.”

Associates at MINI Plant Oxford have gone one step further, creating their very own unique Ox sculpture for the trail. Choosing Ocean Wave Green as their base colour, the hooves, tail and horns are painted in colors from the MINI family including Sunnyside Yellow and British Racing Green.

Michael Lambe, Paint Shop Process Engineer who was responsibile for clear coating the Oxen explained, “The lacquering process is quite unique. Compared to the MINI, with its flowing lines and classic look, the oxen are a whole different animal! Using our ox-pertise, we’ve been able to apply a coat that really makes their artistic design shine.”

Artists from around the county have designed and painting their own Oxen including Oxfordshire based children’s illustrator kOrky Paul, known for the Winnie the Witch books, and local artist and rapper, Rawz who worked on the production line at Plant Oxford in 2006.

Beth Marsh, Director of Fundraising at Sobell House Hospice remarked, “The partnership we have developed between Sobell House Hospice and MINI Plant Oxford is one that strengthens our connections to the wider Oxford Community. We’re extremely excited to unveil OxTrail 2024, with this initiative enabling us to ultimately reach more patients.”

The Hospice first started operating in 1976 and has remained a staple of the community ever since. Plant Oxford is honoured to be able to offer its services to the Sobell House Hospice and OxTrail 2024.

Incredible journey celebrates 60th anniversary of the Mini Cooper

Montevideo, Uruguay. 4 December 2023.

To mark the 60th anniversary of the Mini Cooper Detourist Ben Coombs has begun a massive journey. The automotive adventurer’s Mini 6000 Expedition will take the little car to new heights – 6,000 metres above sea level, to be precise!

Detour-roadtrips.com – the online destination for road trip inspiration and information – is the expedition’s exclusive media partner and will be posting regular updates on the highs – and lows – of this epic undertaking.

Coombs is hugely experienced road tripper with many of his past adventures already featured on the Detour website. “From crossing Africa in a Porsche, to driving the length of the Americas in a TVR, I’ve been hitting the road on long distance driving adventures in unlikely cars for many years now,” says Coombs. “However, distance isn’t the only metric with which driving adventures can be measured, so for this project I’ll be exploring another – height.”

During Coomb’s previous American road trip – the Pub2Pub Expedition – he reached a highpoint of around 4,700m in a TVR Chimaera on the Bolivian Altiplano. So, while he already has some experience of high-altitude motoring, the Mini’s target altitude of 6,000m represents quite a step up.

Finding the right location for the expedition proved to be a challenge in itself, he explains: “To find a road that high, you need to be willing to travel. Western Europe’s highest road tops out at an altitude of only around 3,250m, while in North America, even on gravel tracks 4,347m is your limit. There are various roads which approach the 6,000m mark on the Tibetan Plateau, but the only real chance of finding a track which will enable us to take the Mini to this magic height is through a visit to South America. Both Chile and Peru harbour towering volcanoes with old mine tracks to their summits, such as the Aucanquilcha Stratovolcano, where an abandoned mine track reaches 6,176m above sea level. We plan to explore some of these possibilities, and to try to find a dirt track on which our Mini can celebrate the 60th anniversary of its illustrious forebear, at an altitude of six kilometres up.”

The Mini being used for the expedition is a 1974 Mini 1000, which has received a few modifications for its overlanding adventure – including a bespoke roof ten. With four people taking part in the adventure, the Mini is being joined on its South American odyssey by a 1990 Range Rover, making for a duo of iconic British classics. Both cars left the UK by container in mid-October, and are now in Uruguay, about to begin their trip to the thin air of the Andes.

Expedition organiser Coombs’ previous overlanding experience spans 17 years, and includes driving the length of Africa in a classic Porsche, crossing Asia in a Corvette and, most recently, driving a TVR 27,000 miles from the northernmost bar on the planet, to the southernmost. Ben has owned the expedition’s Mini for 16 years, and has recently treated it to a full three-year, nut and bolt restoration. Ben will be joined on the South American overland odyssey by Fraser Pestana – owner of the Range Rover Classic – Darren Weeks and Aglaia Wieland.

The Mini6000 Expedition is receiving support from several sources, all of whom appreciate the adventurous side of classic motoring. These include Classicline Insurance, Somerford Mini, and Coombs’ own road tripping business, Pub2Pub Adventures. Additionally, as the trip is the follow-up to Coombs’ Pub2Pub Expedition, it was inevitable that it would be receiving its own beer. ‘Mini6000’ is an English-style IPA, which is being brewed in the UK by Bulletproof Brewing, and in the US by Motosonora Brewing. As a fun twist in keeping with the expedition’s ethos, the Mini has been fitted with a beer tap and the team are aiming to pull ‘the world’s highest pint’ when it reaches its target of 6,000 metres.
