Volvo Cars reached an important milestone in its electrification journey in September, as it delivered its one millionth plug-in hybrid.

The company is transitioning towards becoming a fully electrified car maker, with plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) a significant pillar of the company’s growth today, as signified by this milestone.

PHEVs made up 23 per cent of Volvo Cars’ global sales in the first half of 2025. PHEV sales grew from almost 46,000 units in 2019 to over 177,000 units in 2024, underpinned by strong demand for the XC60 and XC90 PHEV in all three main sales regions.

The XC60 was the best-selling PHEV in Europe in 2024 and led the premium PHEV segment globally in the last three years. It continues to be a segment leader in 2025. Both the XC60 and XC90 were renewed last year, reinforcing their appeal in key markets such as Sweden, the US and China.

Thanks to the robust demand for its PHEVs, Volvo Cars has the highest share of PHEV sales of its total sales among all legacy premium car makers. It also continues to roll out new PHEVs, as demonstrated by the recently launched XC70 SUV, which is Volvo Cars’ first long-range plug-in hybrid with an electric range of over 200 kilometers under the CLTC testing cycle.

“Volvo Cars is committed to a fully electric future, and we will get there in a pace that suits our customers,” says Erik Severinson, chief commercial officer at Volvo Cars. “Our plug-in hybrid cars are a crucial bridge towards that future for those customers who are not yet ready to go fully electric.”

Internal Volvo Cars data shows that its PHEVs are often used as if they were fully electric, especially in urban areas. On average, drivers of Volvo PHEVs use their car without internal combustion power for around half of total driving time.

“While we invest and grow our presence in the growing premium fully electric segment, we will also continue to update and refresh our hybrids,” says Erik Severinson. “This allows more time for charging infrastructure to be built up, thereby easing the transition to a fully electric world.”

Volvo Cars has been a leading maker of plug-in hybrids for over a decade. It launched its first PHEV already in 2012, when it started selling a diesel PHEV variant of the V60 estate. For several years after, it was the only global car maker that offered a PHEV version of every model in its line-up.

It currently offers PHEV variants on five different models, which complement a line-up of six fully electric models. This balanced product portfolio provides Volvo Cars with a strategic advantage, allowing it to offer premium electrified cars in all shapes and sizes to global customers.

Introduction of new Plus Pro equipment grade on selected models

Further roll-out of new Volvo Car infotainment user experience with more powerful Qualcomm computing platform

Spring brings a wealth of activity across Volvo Cars’ UK model range, extending consumer choice and raising product appeal with new model versions, trim levels and technologies. The latest introductions demonstrate Volvo Cars’ commitment to keeping pace with customer tastes and requirements, and providing a wide choice of electrified powertrains – be that fully electric, plug-in hybrid or mild-hybrid.

New look and new features for the XC60
The XC60’s status as Volvo Cars’ top-selling model globally is strengthened with a series of updates in a wide-ranging refresh programme for 2025. The updated mid-size SUV is marked out by sharp new exterior styling with a new-look grille, fresh alloy wheel designs and dark-finished rear lamp clusters.

There are arguably even bigger changes inside. The interior is updated to bring the latest user experience (UX) – as already seen in the EX30, ES90, XC90 and EX90 – to the XC60, accessed via a faster and more responsive infotainment system, complete with a larger 11.2-inch touchscreen. Practicality and clean, minimalist styling are combined in a redesigned central storage console and wireless charging pad, while the cabin environment has been further enhanced with improved sound insulation measures. There are also new upholstery choices, including bio-attributable Nordico and a navy herringbone woven fabric.

Three powertrains are available: the B5 mild-hybrid petrol and T6 and T8 petrol-electric plug-in hybrids. On-the-road prices start at £49,240 for the B5 Core version and extend to £69,860 for the T8 Plug-in Hybrid Ultra Black Edition.

EX90 range grows with new Single Motor version and Plus trim level
The flagship EX90 fully electric large SUV range has been extended with the addition of a new Single Motor, rear-wheel-drive version and Plus trim level.

The new powertrain features a 104/100kWh (nominal/usable) capacity battery in a powertrain that delivers a maximum of 279hp and 490Nm of torque, enabling 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds. With electric consumption of up to 3.4 miles per kWh, the EX90 Single Motor has a range of up to 380 miles on a full charge.

The new Plus trim level is available for both Single Motor and Twin Motor versions, giving the seven-seat SUV a new entry-level on-the-road price of £82,660. The equipment specification remains in line with the model’s premium status, including four-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, head-up display, 14.5-inch touchscreen control system and a 360-degree camera set-up all provided as standard. Twin Motor versions also come with air suspension and adaptive dampers.

EX30 Cross Country pricing and specification
The EX30 small SUV is the latest model to follow the Volvo Cross Country tradition of more rugged looks and performance.

Introduced as a single variant, it is based on the EX30 Twin Motor Performance Ultra. Its Cross Country credentials are exhibited by stylish and practical exterior details, including matt black front and bootlid shields, bespoke front and rear bumpers with integrated skidplates, and matt black wheelarch extensions. The 19-inch alloy wheels have a dedicated design with a matt finish.

The EX30 Cross Country is engineered for tackling rougher surfaces thanks to all-wheel drive and ground clearance increased by 19mm. Its suspension is tuned for a smoother ride, too.

Available to order now, the EX30 Cross Country has an on-the-road price of £47,060.

Larger battery added to EC40 and EX40
The introduction of a larger battery has increased the driving range of the EC40 compact crossover and EX40 compact SUV. The Single Motor Extended Range versions of both models are now equipped with an 82/79kWh (nominal/usable) capacity unit, replacing the previous 78/75kWh battery. The principal benefit is an increase of around 15 miles in driving range – up to a maximum of 360 miles for the EC40 (previously 346 miles) and 358 miles for the EX40 (previously 343 miles).

New Plus Pro trim level
There is added customer choice with the introduction of a new trim level, Plus Pro, across the EC40, EX40, XC40, XC60 and XC90 model ranges.

Positioned between the established Plus and Ultra equipment grades, it provides both useful technology and additional styling features. On EC40, EX40 and XC40 models, highlights of its additional equipment include pixel LED headlights with adaptive shadow technology, LED front foglights with a cornering function and a 360-degree surround-view camera system. Together, these give the driver an enhanced view of the road ahead and the area immediately around their car, supporting safer driving and easier manoeuvring. On the XC60, the Plus Pro package includes 20-inch alloy wheels, complete with a contrast diamond cut/black finish, and soft Nappa leather ventilated upholstery, while XC90 Plus Pro versions receive 21-inch wheels and the ventilated Nappa leather seats.

Further roll-out of faster, smarter infotainment UX
The roll-out of the new-generation Volvo Car infotainment user experience continues with the EC40, EX40, XC40, V60 and V90 being the latest models to gain the new technology package. The new Snapdragon Cockpit Platform from Qualcomm Technologies also delivers more than twice the response speed and 10 times faster graphics generation than the previous system.

With simplification as a guiding principle, the UX is designed for safe, easy and enjoyable interaction with the car’s multimedia functions, with the most frequently used apps and features located on the home screen. Google services, including Google Maps, Google Assistant and access to the Google Play store, are also built in.

Find out more
All the new and updated models are available to order now, with deliveries to UK customers from this summer.

Some might say it is a saloon. Others will see a fastback, or even hints of an SUV.

We’ll let you be the final judge – all we know is that the new, fully electric Volvo ES90 carves out a new space for itself by eliminating the compromises between those three segments, which puts it in a class of its own.

The ES90 combines the refined elegance of a saloon, the adaptability of a fastback, and the spacious interior and higher ground clearance associated with SUVs. It’s a versatile car that does not compromise on comfort or space. A car that allows for bigger adventures and families, striking the perfect balance between your professional and private life, and allowing you to embrace the special moments in life.

The ES90 is designed to evolve over time and is powered by next-generation core computers that represent an eightfold improvement over the previous generation. It’s the first Volvo car with 800V technology for a longer range and faster charging than any electric Volvo before. And naturally, it’s designed with our pioneering safety tech at its core, in a package that is set to be another Scandinavian design classic from Volvo Cars.

With orderbooks open now in selected markets, the ES90 is the latest addition to our balanced product portfolio of premium Volvo cars. It is the sixth fully electric model in our line-up, joining the EX90, EM90, EX40, EC40 and EX30 as we continue our journey towards full electrification.

“The Volvo ES90 combines our most advanced technologies with Scandinavian design and superior comfort, creating a true premium Volvo car designed to elevate your quality of life,” says Jim Rowan, our CEO. “It joins the EX90 SUV as one of our flagship models and cements our position as an industry leader in software-defined cars that harness the power of core computing.”

Confident, distinctive and practical
Look at the ES90 in profile and what immediately stands out is the car’s confident and distinctive stance, with a slightly raised ride height to provide the driver with a more commanding view of the road. The flowing roofline balances elegant looks with interior space and contributes to excellent aerodynamics, boosting overall efficiency and electric range.

The front features our Thor’s Hammer headlight design, expressing a familiar yet modern Volvo identity. The rear is equally distinctive, with new C-shaped LED rear lamps complemented by LED lamps in the rear window, creating a unique welcome and farewell light sequence. When picking their ES90, customers can choose from seven exterior colours and four wheel options that vary from 20 to 22 inches in size.

The large and wide tailgate hatch makes it easy to load and unload the family luggage or gear for a skiing trip. The boot provides up to 424 litres of loading space. Fold down the three rear seats – all of which can be folded down individually – and the loading space expands to 733 litres. The 22-litre frunk at the front is perfect for the charging cables.

Comfort and functionality throughout the cabin
Inside, the focus is on premium comfort, authentic materials and purpose-driven design, in line with our Scandinavian identity and design principles that are the hallmark of a true Volvo. Thanks to its long wheelbase of 3.1 metres, the ES90 provides extremely generous legroom for second-row passengers, making it an exceptionally comfortable place to travel for adults as well as children. Six interior ambient light themes for sensory well-being and a variety of upholstery options further allow you to personalise the ES90.

The ES90 also comes with a panoramic roof that provides UV protection of up to 99.9 per cent. And if you pick the electrochromic version, you can even adjust the transparency of the glass. So if you’re travelling on a warm summer’s day and you want to ‘turn down’ the sun a bit to reduce glare and boost privacy, you can do so at the touch of a button.

Added support comes from a four-zone climate system with an advanced air purifier, certified as asthma and allergy friendly. It can stop up to 95 per cent of PM 2.5 particulates from entering the cabin and remove 99.9 per cent of grass, tree and pollen allergens.

We’ve crafted the ES90 with superior sound comfort as well. Noise levels inside are very low, making it one of our quietest cabins ever and taking an already smooth and serene riding experience to the next level. That in turn allows you to enjoy the sound system even more.

There are three levels available, led by a top-of-the-line Bowers & Wilkins sound system with 25 separate high-fidelity speakers throughout the cabin, including headrest and ceiling speakers. The system also features the lifelike spatial audio of Dolby Atmos® that delivers an immersive sound experience. Exclusive to the Bowers & Wilkins system is a special mode replicating the sounds of London’s legendary Abbey Road Studios.

Naturally, we’ve equipped the ES90 with our new-generation infotainment system with Google built-in, which includes services such as Google Maps, Google Assistant and more apps on Google Play. The 5G-capable, seamless and responsive system is powered by the Snapdragon® Cockpit Platform from Qualcomm Technologies and is designed to provide you with all the driving-critical information you need when you need it through the 9-inch driver display and the head-up display.

The 14.5-inch centre screen display, meanwhile, gives you access to navigation, entertainment, climate, your phone and more. And to help you navigate tight parking spaces, a new 3D view supported by a 360-degree camera is there to support when you need it.

Regular improvement as standard
The ES90 is built on our SPA2 architecture and, like the EX90, is based on the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack. This consists of one single set of hardware and software modules that will underpin all our upcoming electric cars. It allows us to improve the overall performance and safety technology in the car throughout its lifecycle and roll them out quickly via over-the-air updates across all models based on the Superset.

“The Superset is enabled by core computing, and the ES90 is the first Volvo car to be powered by a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin configuration. That makes it the most powerful car we have ever created in terms of core computing capacity,” says Anders Bell, our Chief Engineering and Technology Officer. “This allows us to further raise the bar on safety and overall performance through data, software and AI.”

The ES90 also represents the latest in terms of electric systems and battery technology. Our new 800-volt technology makes its debut in the ES90, helping to unlock faster charging, a better overall performance and more efficiency. The result is a car that goes farther and charges faster than any electric Volvo before. The ES90 can add 300 kilometres of range in just 10 minutes at 350kW fast charging stations and offers a driving range of up to 700 kilometres under the WLTP testing cycle.

The bold proportions of the ES90 also contribute to the car’s efficiency and translate into a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.25. This illustrates how efficiently a car moves through the air and is the lowest of any car we’ve ever built. The lower the value, the more efficient the car, which for customers means less energy consumption and a longer driving range.

Safe Space Technology inside and out
This being a Volvo, the ES90 is designed to help protect everyone in and around the car. We developed the ES90 to meet our rigorous Volvo Cars Safety Standard, which is building on 55 years of real-world safety research and exceeds official testing requirements.

This ambitious standard was set to help us develop safer cars for various real-world scenarios, which can be far more complicated than the scenarios in standardised testing. Together with its powerful core computers, the ES90 continues our new era of safety we established with the EX90.

The ES90 comes with a strong safety cage, state-of-the-art restraint systems, as well as optimised deformation zones. The active safety systems are powered by an advanced array of sensors, including one lidar, five radars, seven cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors.

This sensor set enables vision beyond human range to help avoid collisions and hazards on the road. The ES90 also has our pioneering driver-understanding system as standard, which can detect when the driver’s attention is no longer focused on the road and step in to support.

Our Safe Space Technology not only supports you when driving, but also when you’re parked. The door opening alert in the ES90 helps to look out for and protect cyclists or pedestrians passing by when you open the doors. And when you’re about to leave the car, the ES90’s full-cabin occupant sensing is there to help you avoid leaving loved ones behind. It can sense submillimetre-scale movement, such as the soft breathing of a baby.

The new Volvo ES90 is available for order now in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Other markets will be added later this year and into 2026.

The small print

Features described may not be available in all markets and may not be standard or available for all models, styles and powertrain options.

The WLTP driving range of up to 700km translates to 740km under the CLTC driving cycle in China and applies to the all-wheel-drive variants with twin motors and 106kWh battery.

Charging times can vary and depend on various factors such as outdoor temperature, battery condition and car condition. Our charging time was based on testing at 350kW charging facilities.

Our advanced air purifier has been certified by Allergy Standards Limited (ASL) as asthma and allergy friendly.

Sweden is our home. Deep lakes, endless forests, great mountain ranges, some of the harshest winters on the planet – and some of the best and most enjoyable cars ever made. So today we unveil not only the new Volvo EX30 Cross Country, but a whole new experience to go with it.

Revealed today as part of a literal fireside chat including outdoors equipment brand Fjällräven at a secluded winter cabin in the north of Sweden, the EX30 Cross Country is designed for people who want big experiences from their small, fully electric SUV.

Volvo EX30 Cross Country with Swedish winter cabin

It takes the successful recipe of the EX30 and adds rugged ingredients, making it perfect for the growing number of people who want to explore beyond their crowded cities – come rain, come shine, or when everything is covered in snow and ice.

We think that ‘Cross Country’ should be an experience, not just a car, so alongside the EX30 Cross Country we’re also launching a new experience package for customers who buy the car, with access to accessories, gear and information aimed at giving you the full potential to explore the great outdoors.

Volvo EX30 Cross Country with Swedish winter cabin

“We launched our first Cross Country car more than 25 years ago, and this concept of durable and all-weather cars is core to the Volvo brand,” said Jim Rowan, Volvo Cars’ CEO. “In Sweden we face harsh winters, but we also like to make the most of them by getting out and exploring our amazing nature, even when it’s minus 20 Celsius outside. That’s why we want to deliver a fully rounded experience, not simply a car, to our EX30 Cross Country customers.”

From city to trail
As a small SUV, the EX30 Cross Country is perfect for the city. It is fully electric, with a range of up to 427km and zero tailpipe emissions, and can be charged from 10-80 per cent in as little as 26 minutes. But it also has several extra features that enable a seamless switch from one natural EX30 habitat to another.

Volvo EX30 Cross Country with Swedish winter cabin

For example, we’ve raised the car higher off the ground compared with the standard EX30, to help you navigate rough terrain more easily. It also has special, bigger wheels, with the option of an 18-inch all-terrain accessory tyre to make those regular countryside outings even easier.

Naturally, the EX30 Cross Country also comes with all-wheel drive, making it more than capable of handling the tough and slippery conditions that are part and parcel of life outside the city.

Volvo EX30 Cross Country with Swedish winter cabin

A style to match ability
The first model in our Cross Country range was introduced in 1997. Designed to cope with the demanding Scandinavian climate, our Cross Country cars perform in a wide variety of road conditions – from muddy tracks and ankle-deep snow to highway driving – with the comfort and convenience elements that Volvo drivers have come to expect.

While its real-world capabilities come first, the EX30 Cross Country is also designed to excel in more diverse conditions – and to look good while doing so.

The front shield of the car and the boot lid get a special dark colour, with the front featuring a unique piece of artwork showing the topography of the Kebnekaise mountain range in Arctic Sweden – an inspiration for many of our designers. Chunky front and rear skidplates as well as wheelarch extensions complete the more rugged look and underline that this car is ready to get out into the wild.

Functional and as safe as you’d expect from a Volvo car
Inside, the EX30 Cross Country is highly functional and contains all the clever tech, storage and design that made the original EX30 such a hit from the moment we revealed it. The doors contain large storage compartments, because we removed the speakers and incorporated them into the soundbar on the dashboard.

A versatile central storage tunnel between driver and passenger can be slid out as a cupholder for your morning coffee or your travel mug, or back if you need to store more things. There’s also a big storage compartment on the floor between driver and passenger. The glove compartment has been placed beneath the centre console, providing easy access for both driver and passenger.

Rear passengers get a neat storage box that slides out from beneath the central tunnel. This box is also removable and washable, so can double up as a waste bin. At the rear, on the boot lid, we included a handy ‘Will it fit?’ guide, so you know exactly how much of your gear you can get in.

Like every new Volvo car, the EX30 Cross Country has Google built in. That means you get a variety of Google products as standard – including Google Maps, one of the best mapping systems in the world. Finding your way to the most remote nature locations was never easier. To make sure you can get straight into a nice warm car, the Volvo EX30 app allows you to precondition your car while you’re still exploring nature.

And naturally, the EX30 Cross Country is as safe as you’d expect a Volvo car to be. We have applied our high standards of protective safety should you need it, but aim to help prevent you getting into a collision in the first place with some clever tech. Braking and steering support will help you avoid collisions with oncoming vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, while a driver-monitoring sensor will give you a nudge if it seems like you are distracted or tired.

Embrace the experience
To further bring the Cross Country concept to life, we’re also launching a Cross Country Experience, to create concrete, tangible benefits that will help you to embrace your inner explorer even more. This means that EX30 Cross Country owners will benefit from an array of bespoke offers. Think of a dedicated, discounted ‘Cross Country Experience’ package of accessories for your car, which includes a load carrier, a roof basket, 18-inch all-terrain tyres and mudflaps*.

We aim to announce further offers in due course.

“We know that more and more people are seeking ways to get closer to nature,” says Jim Rowan. “This is why with our new Cross Country Experience, we aim to create an entire ecosystem around those models, supporting our customers as they embrace adventure.”

In short, the new Volvo EX30 Cross Country is an all-road car that delivers safety, comfort and performance in a capable and adventurous package. The Volvo EX30 Cross Country is available to order now in selected markets, with deliveries starting later this spring. Customers can configure their car here.

Volvo Cars is driving down the cost of electric car ownership in a new partnership with energy supplier OVO and energy software company Kaluza, giving drivers access to home recharging at a market-leading low price, at any time of day.

C40 Recharge, Fjord Blue

Owners of eligible Volvo EVs* (electric vehicles) using OVO’s Charge Anytime free add-on can benefit from a special rate of just 7p per kilowatt hour, equivalent to around just 2p per mile driven. Those taking advantage of the offer will further benefit from a £50 credit to their OVO energy plan, sufficient to cover the energy cost of around 2,700 miles of driving in a Volvo EC40**.

The add-on works by automatically optimising charging when carbon emissions and prices are lower. Volvo owners need to have an OVO account and then select the Charge Anytime add-on using their Volvo Cars app. They can then access the discounted charging rate when they connect their car to their compatible home charger**, at any time of day. According to OVO, the special rate is one of the most competitive in the UK, helping owners charge their vehicle for as little as £217 a year***.

Charge Anytime is powered by Kaluza’s advanced software platform for energy and is calculated by OVO to have helped its customers save more than £11 million since its introduction in 2022.

New research by OVO suggests that financial considerations are key to UK drivers’ decisions to switch to an EV. More than half (56%) of those surveyed say lower running costs are the main factor that would influence their decision, followed by government or tax incentives (40%). Three in four reported that they would be more likely to purchase an EV if they had access to a charging tariff which automatically charges their car at the lowest rates possible.

Nicole Melillo Shaw, Volvo Car UK Managing Director, said: “With this new partnership with OVO and Kaluza, we’re helping our customers maximise the benefits of electric car ownership, both in terms of their day-to-day running costs and by reducing their energy carbon footprint. The economic and environmental benefits of this initiative will add to the appeal of our award-winning models and encourage more people to make the move to EV ownership.”

Mat Moakes, OVO Chief Commercial Officer, said: We’re committed to accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles and rewarding customers for making the switch. Volvo Cars is a leading manufacturer of EVs, and this partnership will help offer affordable motoring to more customers than ever before. This is another way we are helping our customers cut costs and carbon for a greener future.”

Neel Gulhar, Chief Product Officer at Kaluza, said: “Integrations like this are exactly what automakers and energy retailers need to put customers at the centre of the energy transition and ensure nobody gets left behind. We’re proud to partner with the world’s largest auto brands and forward-thinking utilities to accelerate the adoption of EVs within a smarter, greener energy system.”

Available to order now with first customer deliveries expected in early 2025

Wireless Apple CarPlay also added to EX30 range via an over-the-air update

Volvo Car UK is pleased to confirm the UK model range, specification and prices for the new XC90, its flagship hybrid SUV.

The revised model is distinguished by fresh exterior design details that amplify its clean, contemporary styling and create a stronger visual connection to its fully electric counterpart, the EX90 SUV. These changes include a new grille treatment with an eye-catching new graphic, slimmer headlight units (retaining the distinctive ‘Thor’s hammer’ detailing) and a reprofiled bonnet and front bumper.

Inside, the principal change is the introduction of a new, free-standing 11.2-inch touchscreen control system. The unit – like the one introduced in the EX30 and EX90 models – has a higher-resolution display than the one in the outgoing XC90 and is designed for easier, more intuitive operation. It brings one-touch access to the most frequently used functions and apps, as well as the Drive Mode settings in plug-in hybrid versions.

Using over-the-air technology, Volvo Cars can provide seamless software updates. Demonstrating the convenience of this technology, wireless access to Apple CarPlay has recently been enabled for the EX30 fully electric small SUV, with no need for owners to take their car to a service centre for installation.

New colours have also been introduced to the XC90: a deep Mulberry Red for the exterior (a shade which debuted on the EX90) and Cardamom interior upholstery, matched with contrasting Charcoal headlining and door panels, and a checkered aluminium or brown ash deco trim.

Alongside its distinctive design and advanced equipment features, the XC90 remains an eminently practical family car – as borne out by multiple awards. The new model retains a fully flexible seven-seat layout and a load compartment offering 680 litres of storage space in the mild-hybrid petrol versions and 640 litres in the plug-in hybrid (measured to the glass line, with the two rearmost seats folded down).

Equipment grades
The new model is available with a choice of three equipment grades: Core, Plus and Ultra. Befitting the XC90’s flagship status, the equipment specification across the board is rich in features to provide the highest levels of safety, comfort, infotainment and driving pleasure.

At the entry point to the range, the Core versions are equipped as standard with four-zone climate control, heated front and outer middle-row seats, and a heated steering wheel. The seats are upholstered in Nordico (a progressive material created from textiles made from recyclables such as PET bottles and bio-attributed material from forests in Sweden and Finland). In addition to the new 11.2-inch touchscreen with Google built in, the specification now includes larger, 20-inch alloy wheels with a contrasting black and diamond-cut finish. Other features include matrix LED headlights, a reversing camera and a full array of systems for active and passive safety protection, and driver warning and assistance.

The Plus versions build on the Core specification with the introduction of the Active Four-C Chassis, with adaptive dampers and electronic air suspension. Easier and more precise manoeuvring is supported by a 360-degree surround-view camera system and side proximity sensors, while the cabin ambience is enhanced by the addition of a tilt-and-slide panoramic sunroof with sunshade. There is also an upgrade to the audio system, with a 600W Harman Kardon set-up, complete with 13 speakers.

At the top of the range, the Ultra versions maximise the XC90’s luxury profile. Details include 21-inch alloy wheels, laminated glazing, dark-tinted rear windows with integrated side window shades, ventilated and perforated Nappa leather upholstery, and front seats with a built-in massage function and power-adjustable side bolsters. The audio experience moves further up the scale with a 1400W Bowers & Wilkins 18-speaker system.

Ultra versions can also be specified with a Dark or Bright styling theme, featuring high-gloss black or chrome exterior detailing respectively. The Bright theme is standard for the Core grade, while Plus cars come with the dark theme.

Powertrains
The new XC90 comes with either a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid or a petrol mild-hybrid powertrain. Together with the fully electric EX90, this provides consumers with a wide choice of electrified power options at the highest level in the Volvo line-up.

The T8 petrol-electric plug-in hybrid offers up to 44 miles of electric driving*, with battery recharging from empty to full taking from three hours. With a 310hp petrol engine and a 145hp electric motor, the T8 can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 5.4 seconds, while CO2 emissions are from 30g/km**. The B5 mild-hybrid petrol delivers 250hp and accelerates from 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds. Its CO2 emissions are from 193g/km**.

New XC90 on-the-road pricing
B5 AWD Core – £63,790
T8 Plug-in Hybrid AWD Core – £72,650
B5 AWD Plus – £68,790
T8 Plug-in Hybrid AWD Plus – £77,650
B5 AWD Ultra – £75,290
T8 Plug-in Hybrid AWD Ultra – £84,150

Back by popular demand – the V60 and V90 estates

Volvo Car UK is adding a stylish monochrome look to its model range this summer with the introduction of Black Edition versions of its fully electric EC40 crossover and EX40 SUV, and petrol XC40 SUV. The new season also heralds the return of the V60 and V90 estate cars to the line-up to meet renewed customer demand.

The new Black Editions
The Black Edition models stand out with all-black exterior styling, including Onyx Black paintwork, black high-gloss front grille, Volvo emblem and tailgate badging, plus 20-inch five-spoke high-gloss black alloy wheels. The package is available with two equipment grades, Plus and Ultra, with on-the-road prices from £40,720.

There are two powertrain choices for the EC40 and EX40 Black Edition models: in addition to the rear-wheel-drive 252hp Single Motor Extended Range, there is a new all-wheel-drive Twin Motor Performance version. This delivers 442hp (up from 408hp in other all-wheel-drive EC40s and EX40s) and a remapped accelerator response. It also comes with a Performance drive mode to help the driver enjoy the extra power to the full.

The XC40 Black Edition is offered with the B3 and B4 mild-hybrid petrol powertrains, offering 163hp and 197hp respectively.

The Plus specification includes features such as a heated steering wheel and outer rear seats, front parking sensors, a powered driver’s seat with memory settings, an advanced air-purification system and Connect suede textile/microtech upholstery. The fully electric EC40 and EX40 also have an energy-efficient heat pump for the climate control system that helps maximise driving range.

At the top of the range, the Ultra versions add a 360-degree surround-view parking camera system and active bending pixel LED headlights with adaptive shadow technology. A powered passenger seat and power-folding rear headrests are also provided, together with a tilt and slide panoramic sunroof (EX40 and XC40 models). The audio system is a 600W, 12-speaker Harman Kardon set-up with Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound.

Back by popular demand: the Volvo V60 and V90 estates
A rise in customer demand has prompted a welcome return for the V60 and V90 estate cars to Volvo’s UK range. The models were removed from the portfolio in the summer last year, in line with changes in customer preferences, but renewed interest in the bodystyle – a key element of Volvo Cars’ heritage – has brought them back into the line-up.

The mid-size V60 is available in Plus and Ultra specifications with either the T6 or T8 petrol-electric plug-in hybrid powertrains, which combine a 145hp electric motor with a 253hp or 310hp petrol engine respectively, or the 197hp B4 mild-hybrid petrol powertrain. The larger V90 offers the same trim choices, exclusively with plug-in hybrid power – the T6 for the Plus version and the T8 for the Ultra.

On-the road prices are from £43,370 for the V60 and £62,280 for the V90. All V60 and V90 plug-in hybrid variants enjoy a competitive benefit-in-kind tax rating of 8% for business/company car users.

The new Black Editions and the V60 and V90 estates are on sale now, with first UK customer deliveries expected in Q3 2024. For more information and to use the online configurator, please go to www.volvocars.co.uk

Our new fully electric premium MPV, the Volvo EM90, is not just designed to be a comfortable living room on the move and a car that provides you with room for life with your loved ones. It is also a car that broadens the appeal of Volvo Cars and meets even more customer needs.

The EM90 demonstrates our strong abilities to innovate and meet specific market demands. The multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) segment has gained considerable popularity in recent years, especially in many parts of Asia. This is one of the main reasons why the EM90 is coming first to China, the world’s largest car market.

Volvo EM90 Concept World Stills

Following the reveal of the already award-winning and fully electric EX30 small SUV earlier this year, the EM90 represents the second expansion of our model portfolio in quick succession. Both the EX30 and EM90 will help us to reach new audiences, cover more of the global automotive market and realise more profitable volume.

The EM90 also reinforces our commitment to be a fully electric car maker by 2030. In the coming years we’ll roll out a whole family of new, fully electric Volvo cars, delivering on everything our customers expect from a Volvo with zero tailpipe emissions.

This renewed model portfolio will not only ensure that by 2030 we sell only fully electric cars around the globe – an important part of our sustainability commitments – it is also part of our journey towards profitable growth and becoming an industry leader in sustainable mobility.

“With the EM90, we’re taking Volvo Cars’ heritage and leadership in safety into the exciting new electric MPV segment,” said Jim Rowan, Chief Executive at Volvo Cars. “It allows us to tap new market demand we’ve not explored before and broadens the appeal of the Volvo brand to more people.”

Volvo EM90 PR Images

A long heritage of versatility
While the MPV segment is a new one for us, the concept of versatility is far from unfamiliar territory. In fact, the Volvo Duett from 1953 was developed specifically as a versatile and spacious car, many years before the MPV segment was even formally created.

A highlight in our rich heritage that celebrates its 70th birthday this year, the Duett is still one of the most sought-after Volvo models by collectors and enthusiasts today. It was popular among both families and business owners in Scandinavia and the United States.

In later decades, the Duett inspired our world-famous range of estates, and it was an equally important source of inspiration for our designers when they started work on the EM90.

Whether you wanted a practical company car for your business or a spacious family car that could also double as a space to sleep in during camping trips, there was a Duett variant for a broad variety of scenarios – its name, which means ‘two cars into one’, says it all.

Read more about the features in the EM90 and what it can do in this blog post.

An important new segment
The EM90 presents an important addition to our fully electric portfolio and will support our position as one of the fastest-growing brands in the premium pure electric segment. While the premium MPV segment in China is relatively small today, it is an important one. And in the spirit of the Duett, our EM90 premium MPV serves a dual purpose for its customers.

When the car is not used for family trips, it doubles as executive business transport that offers the ultimate comfortable interior environment for meetings and business calls. In short, for customers looking for safety and a spacious, versatile and comfortable premium experience on the move, the EM90 is an exciting new option for them.

The Volvo EM90 is coming first to China and is now available for pre-orders for customers in China.
